Kennesaw, Ga. – The USC Upstate softball team scored four runs in the top of the 11th to hold on for a 5-3 victory in game one and the Kennesaw State Owls countered by taking a 4-1 win in game two of the ASUN doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bailey Park.

Upstate currently sits at 30-8 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while Kennesaw State is 26-10 on the season and 3-2 in league play.

GAME ONE – USC UPSTATE 5, KENNESAW STATE 3 (11)

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 10th – Kendsey Chappelear broke a scoreless tie with two outs on her RBI single to right field, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Brittany Case was placed on second to start the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kayla Hussey.
  • Bottom 10th – Courtney Sutter tied the game at 1-1 with two outs following her RBI single to right field.
  • Top 11th – Upstate broke the game open courtesy of a four-run inning to take a 5-1 lead over the Owls. Case highlighted the inning with her two-RBI single to right field. Karla Beasley began the frame with an RBI leadoff double to left field and later scored on another RBI double by Abbie Millete.
  • Bottom 11th – Kennesaw State attempted a late rally but fell two runs short after plating two runs to put the final score at 5-3. Jessie Mullen brought in the first run with her RBI single and Taylor Denton followed with an RBI single to left field.
Notables
  • Holly McKinnon (16-4) earned the win after pitching all 11 innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on 12 hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
  • Alley Cutting (13-5) took the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) on nine hits, two walks and four strikeouts in 11 innings of work.
  • The 11 innings pitched by McKinnon marks the first time this season, and third of her career, that she has pitched over ten innings in an appearance.
  • Millete, Case and Ryan Rector all led the Spartans offensively with two hits, while Case had a game-high two RBI.
  • Four Owls collected two hits apiece and Denton, Sutter and Mullen drove in one run.
  • Upstate played in its third extra-inning contest to begin conference play and improved to 2-1 in those games
  • The 11 innings are the most played by the Spartans this season.
GAME TWO – USC UPSTATE 1, KENNESAW STATE 4

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 1st – Beasley gave Upstate a 1-0 lead with one out in the first on her RBI single to left field. Rector reached on a triple to right field the previous at-bat and scored on the base hit from Beasley.
  • Bottom 5th – Kennesaw State tallied four runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead over the Spartans. Sutter was responsible for three of the four runs in the inning after her three-run homer to right field. Denton tied the game on her RBI single to right field.
Notables
  • Lexi Shubert (13-4) suffered the loss throwing six innings and surrendered four runs on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
  • Logan Viers (9-4) picked up the win tossing a complete game and allowed one run on seven hits, no walks and one strikeout.
  • Megan Obier contributed a team-leading two hits for the Spartans while Beasley had one RBI.
  • Denton posted two hits for the Owls and Sutter led all players with three RBI.
