Columbia, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the South Carolina Gamecocks in its season opener on Friday evening in front of 5,048 fans at Stone Stadium.
Upstate falls to 0-1 on the season while South Carolina improves to 1-0 overall.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- The Gamecocks held a 14-12 advantage over the Spartans in shots, but Upstate led 7-6 in the first half.
- South Carolina attempted six corner kicks while the Spartans took five.
- Both teams finished the contest with three saves.
- Sebastian Quinteros led Upstate offensively with three shots, and Calon Minors, Cam Philpot and Jaedon Williamson had two apiece.
- Luca Mayr attempted a team-high five shots for the Gamecocks.
- Santiago Restrepo grabbed three saves in the match as well as William Pyle.
USC UPSTATE GOALS
- For the second straight year, Philpot scored the Spartans first goal of the season in 2nd minute off his header from three yards out on a corner kick from Minors. (USC Upstate 1, South Carolina 0)
SOUTH CAROLINA GOALS
- Petter Soelberg evened the score at 1-1 for the Gamecocks in the 30th minute after gaining possession off a deflected ball inside the Upstate 18-yard box. (USC Upstate 1, South Carolina 1)
- Mayr gave South Carolina a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute with his penalty kick past Restrepo. (USC Upstate 1, South Carolina 2)
