Upstate Suffers 3-1 Loss to Denver at Hampton Inn and Suites Classic

Charleston, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team began day two of the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic on Saturday morning by falling to the Denver Pioneers 3-1 at TD Arena.

Upstate falls to 0-2 on the season while Denver improves to 2-0.

The Pioneers won the match by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-14.

STATS OF THE MATCH

  • Montana Swanson led the Spartans offensively with nine kills and just missed on a double-double after finishing with 13 digs.
  • Madison Haake also fell short of her second double-double of the season on 32 assists and nine digs.
  • Kaleigh Kelley finished with a team-high 15 digs and Callie Yeargin also contributed 10.
  • Gloria Ikenegbu and Lily Dempsey each had seven kills in the match. For Ikenegbu, the seven kills are a new career-high.
  • Lydia Bartalo posted a double-double for Denver with 10 kills and 12 digs.
  • Becca Latham had a match-high 14 kills.
  • The Pioneers held a .289 to .112 advantage in hitting percentage.

SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN

  • Set One:  The teams traded the opening 16 points and were tied 8-8 early in the first set. Haake gave Upstate a 14-11 lead with her kill until Denver evened the score again at 15-15 following a quick 4-1 run. The Spartans held off the run to go back in front 22-19 late on a kill by Brianna Tellschow. The Pioneers finished the set on a 6-1 run to win 25-23 and lead the match 1-0.
  • Set Two:  The beginning of the second set saw the score tied several times including at 12-12 following a service error by Denver. Upstate then used a 7-2 run midway to hold a 19-14 advantage. The Spartans held their largest lead of the set at 23-16 after the Pioneers committed back-to-back attack errors. Denver would get as close as 24-21 but Tellschow gave Upstate the 25-21 victory the next play with her kill, evening the match at 1-1.
  • Set Three:  The Pioneers went on a 6-1 run at the start of the third set and held an 11-4 lead after scoring five straight points. The Spartans cut their deficit down to four, 11-7, on kills from Ikenegbu and Dempsey, and a service ace by Kelley. Upstate then used four straight points to get to within one at 14-13 after a bad set and attack error. Denver would extend its lead 19-14 after the Spartan rally and concluded the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-16, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • Set Four:  Upstate took a 9-6 lead early in the fourth set after scoring five straight points with two coming on kills by Swanson and Rebecca Shearer. The Pioneers came back to tie the set at 10-10 and would go in front 16-11 several plays later. Denver outscored the Spartans 9-3 after that for the 25-14 triumph to capture the match 3-1.
