Boiling Springs, N.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team opened play at the AmericInn Runnin' Bulldog Classic on Friday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to the Wofford Terriers at Paul Porter Arena.

Upstate falls to 0-4 overall while Wofford improves to 3-2 on the season.

The Terriers won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-23.

STATS OF THE MATCH

• Wofford held a .287 to .132 mark over the Spartans in hitting percentage.
• Callie Yeargin led Upstate offensively with a season-high 11 kills, while McKenna Kirkpatrick and Lily Dempsey added six each. Yeargin also had seven digs.
• Madison Haake concluded the contest with 20 assists and seven digs, and Kaleigh Kelley posted a team-high nine digs.
• Catie Cronister had a match-high 28 kills for the Terriers and hit .423 at the net.
• Lorissa King contributed 46 assists and nine digs, and Taylor Gill recorded 15 digs.

SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN

• Set One:  Through the opening 20 points the score sat tied seven times as the Spartans held a 9-8 lead during that stretch on a Wofford attack error. The Terriers would later go ahead 15-12 before Upstate responded with three straight points to even the score at 15-15. Wofford finished the set on a 10-3 run for the 25-18 victory.
• Set Two:  The Terriers began the second set on a 10-4 run before the Spartans made the score 11-7 on a kill by Kirkpatrick. Wofford extended its lead to 17-10 midway after scoring six of the next nine points and led by as many as eight the remainder of the set. Upstate would get as close as four points at 24-20 when Yeargin and Kirkpatrick teamed up for a combination block. The Terriers won the set the following play.
• Set Three:  The third set featured a total of 13 ties and four lead changes. Dempsey tied the frame for the Spartans early at 5-5 with her kill. Upstate stayed within a five-point deficit the entire set and put the score at 16-16 on Yeargin's kill. Haake gave the Spartans a 21-20 lead late with her service ace. Wofford outscored Upstate 5-2 after that for the 25-23 triumph.
