Haake Records Double-Double, Upstate Falls at Charlotte 3-0

Charlotte, N.C. – Madison Haake compiled her team-leading fourth double-double of the season on Wednesday evening but the USC Upstate volleyball team dropped a 3-0 non-conference decision to the Charlotte 49ers at Halton Arena.

Upstate falls to 2-5 overall while Charlotte improves to 6-3 on the season.

The 49ers won the match by scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-16.

STATS OF THE MATCH

  • Charlotte held a .276 to .131 advantage over the Spartans in hitting percentage.
  • Payton Duncan led Upstate offensively with a career-high nine kills, followed by Gloria Ikenegbu with eight and Lily Dempsey seven.
  • Haake picked up her fourth double-double in seven matches this season after finishing with 34 assists and 11 digs.
  • Kaleigh Kelley had a team-best 14 digs.
  • Sydney Rowan registered a double-double for the 49ers on 14 kills and 11 digs, and Janell Sparks added 12 kills.
  • Mackenzie Reaume and Sofie Perrens combined for 35 assists while Yumi Garcia posted 14 digs.

SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN

  • Set One:  The opening set featured 12 ties and seven lead changes. The Spartans began the frame on a 7-3 run capped by a kill from McKenna Kirkpatrick. Charlotte answered with three straight points to even the score at 7-7. The score would then be tied seven times over the next 24 points before Dempsey and Kirkpatrick combined for three consecutive points to give Upstate a 20-17 lead. The 49ers finished the set on an 8-3 run to win 25-23.
  • Set Two:  Charlotte recorded eight consecutive points as part of a 13-2 run to start the second set. The Spartans fought back courtesy of a 10-5 run to make the score 18-12 after a 49er attack error. The 49ers recorded the final three points for the 25-16 victory.
  • Set Three:  Upstate held an early 7-6 lead in the third set when Dempsey connected on a kill. After Charlotte took a 12-7 lead, the Spartans cut their deficit back to three, 12-9, on a Rebecca Shearer kill. The 49ers broke the set open with a 9-4 run and led 21-13 late. Sparks secured the last two points for Charlotte to give it a 25-16 triumph.

UP NEXT

  • Upstate will play in its third tournament of the season this weekend at the Demon Deacon Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
  • The Spartans are scheduled to face Maryland Eastern Shore, Wake Forest and William & Mary at the two-day tournament.
