Spartans Drop Heartbreaker at Stetson

Spartanburg, S.C. – Brittney Chambers' layup with 40.1 seconds remaining allowed the Stetson Hatters to claim a 62-61 victory over the USC Upstate women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center. 

Stetson improves to 10-8 overall and 1-1 in ASUN Conference play while Upstate falls to 6-11 and 1-1. 

A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS

  • Morgan Williams posted her first career double-double and the first for Upstate this season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Tamera Thorpe scored a team-leading 14 points off the bench.
  • Anda Kuzmina finished with 10 points.
  • Brittney Delva had a game-high seven assists.
  • Riley Popplewell grabbed 10 rebounds.
  • Chambers and McKenna Beach each had 17 points to lead Stetson.
  • Stetson outrebounded Upstate 44-40.
  • Upstate shot 40.4 percent (23-for-57) from the field while Stetson finished at 31.4 percent (22-for-70).

FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • A Beach layup gave the hosts a 5-2 lead with 5:31 remaining in the opening frame.
  • Chambers sank a 3-pointer with 2:50 left to give Stetson an 11-6 lead, its largest of the game.
  • Upstate closed the quarter on a 10-0 run for a 16-11 lead. Rylie Parkhurst opened the run with a 3-pointer at the 2:00 mark while a Thorpe layup with four seconds left served as the final basket of the period.

SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Parkhurst gave Upstate a 19-11 lead after a 3-pointer 43 seconds into the stanza.
  • After a Williams layup gave the Spartans a 21-15 lead, Stetson went on a 9-2 run as the Hatters led 24-23 following a Chambers layup with 3:30 left.
  • Stetson led 28-25 at halftime.

THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Beach opened the scoring with a layup at the 9:36 mark.
  • Upstate answered with a 13-1 run, claiming a 38-31 lead following a Popplewell jumper with 6:07 to play.
  • DeNisha Swain's 3-pointer with 3:26 remaining gave Upstate its first double digit lead of the game, 46-36.
  • Kuzmina beat the buzzer with a layup to give the Spartans a 52-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Thorpe gave Upstate its largest lead of the game at 14 points as she made a layup with 9:04 to play in regulation.
  • Michelle Pruitt trimmed the Upstate lead to 56-47 with 6:13 remaining before a Delva 3-pointer pushed the Upstate advantage to 12, 59-47.
  • Stetson used an 8-0 run to pull within four, 59-55, with 2:21 left.
  • Thorpe hit a pair of free throws at the 2:05 mark to give Upstate a 61-55 edge.
  • A Beach 3-pointer followed by a Chambers layup brought Stetson within one, 61-60, with just over a minute left.
  • After an Upstate turnover and Stetson timeout, Chambers missed her initial layup but grabbed the rebound and put up the go-ahead basket.
