Spartans Unable to Hold off Late North Florida Charge

Spartanburg, S.C. – The North Florida Ospreys scored four points in the final 91 seconds to break a 61-61 tie as they earned a 65-61 victory over USC Upstate in ASUN women's basketball action at the G.B. Hodge Center on Saturday afternoon.

North Florida improves to 9-10 overall and 2-2 in league play while USC Upstate drops to 6-13 and 1-3.

A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS

  • Riley Popplewell led USC Upstate with 11 points and was joined in double figures by DeNisha Swain with 10 points.
  • A'Lexxus Davis grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to lead the Spartans.
  • Keonna Farmer scored a game-high 18 points to lead North Florida.
  • Arianna Emanuel-Wright and Maiya Rumph each scored 10 points for the Ospreys.
  • USC Upstate outrebounded North Florida 46-34 and held an 18-6 edge on the offensive glass.
  • North Florida went 26-for-59 (44.1 percent) from the field while USC Upstate finished 21-for-64 (32.8 percent) from the field.

FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • A pair of Rumph jumpers gave the Ospreys a 4-0 lead with 6:54 remaining.
  • A free throw by Popplewell got USC Upstate on the board at the 6:27 mark.
  • Upstate took its first lead of the game, 7-6, on a Brittney Delva layup with 5:15 to go.
  • Farmer tied the game at 8 on a jumper with 4:18 remaining.
  • Following a Tesh Hanson layup that trimmed the Upstate lead to 11-10 with 3:44 left, the Spartans went on a 9-0 run capped by a Rylie Parkhurst 3-pointer to lead 20-10 with just under two minutes remaining.
  • Upstate led 20-14 at the end of the opening stanza.

SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • North Florida trimmed the Upstate advantage to two, 22-20, on a Tiffany Tolbert jumper with 7:22 to play.
  • USC Upstate answered with an 11-3 run to lead 33-23 following a pair of Anda Kuzmina free throws at the 4:27 mark.
  • The Spartans led by a game-high 12 points, 35-23, thanks to a Popplewell jumper just under four minutes remaining.
  • Farmer hit a pair of free throws with less than one second remaining in the half to send USC Upstate into the locker room with a 39-29 advantage.

THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Davis' jumper with 6:35 remaining in the period gave Upstate a 41-32 lead and prompted a North Florida timeout.
  • A jumper by Emanuel-Wright brought the Ospreys within five, 43-38, with 4:46 remaining.
  • Delva gave Upstate a 47-40 lead with 1:54 to play after making the second of two free throw attempts.
  • North Florida closed the quarter on a 7-0 run, tying the game at 47 as Hanson completed the three-point play with 23 seconds left.
  • Upstate finished 1-for-14 (7.1 percent) from the field in the quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • The teams traded 3-pointers on two occasions to remain tied at 53 with 7:30 left.
  • Emanuel-Wright gave the visitors a 55-53 lead at the 7:12 mark before Parkhurst's 3-pointer allowed Upstate to claim a 56-55 lead with 6:42 to go.
  • Popplewell made the second of two free throws to tie the contest at 61 with 2:31 remaining.
  • Farmer's free throw with 91 seconds left allowed North Florida to claim a 62-61 advantage.
  • Following Tolbert's free throw that gave the Ospreys a 63-61 lead with 17 seconds left, USC Upstate advanced the ball past midcourt with a timeout and had a chance to tie the game, but a layup was off the mark and the rebound grabbed by Farmer with under three seconds left. Farmer was fouled and made both of her free throws to secure the win.
  • The fourth quarter featured four ties and seven lead changes.
