USC Upstate Defeats Marshall on Case's Walk off Single

Spartanburg, S.C. – Brittany Case's RBI single with one out in the bottom of the seventh lifted the USC Upstate softball team to its tenth consecutive victory on Friday evening as the Spartans defeated the Marshall Thundering Herd 2-1 at Cyrill Stadium.

USC Upstate improves to 10-0 on the season while Marshall falls to 4-7 overall.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Bottom 3rd – The Spartans struck first for a run in the third and led 1-0 on Case's first RBI single of the day. Ansley Gilstrap scored on the single after drawing a leadoff walk and moved to third on Kristen Wright's sacrifice bunt and an infield single by Megan Obier.
  • Top 7th – The Thundering Herd tied the game at 1-1 with one out on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field by pinch-hitter Katie Adams. Aly Harrell started the inning with a pinch-hit double off the top of the center field wall and Wylie Glover re-entered the game in her place. Madi Marshall sacrificed Glover to third and scored on Adams' sacrifice fly.
  • Bottom 7th – Wright started the frame with a single to right field and moved to second after Karla Beasley reached on an infield single. Obier followed by sacrificing both runners ahead one base. Case took a 1-1 offering from Marshall reliever Ali Burdette up the middle allowing Wright to record the game-winning run.

Notables

  • Caylie Van Auken (2-0) earned the win in relief tossing one inning and gave up just one hit.
  • Burdette (2-3) took the loss surrendering one run on three hits, no walks and no strikeouts in one-third of an inning in relief.
  • USC Upstate starter Christina Biggerstaff went six innings and allowed one run on three hits, five walks and four strikeouts.
  • Case finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
  • Gilstrap, Wright, Beasley, Obier, Logan Morris and Kayla Hussey each recorded one hit.
  • Gilstrap and Wright scored both of the Spartans runs.
  • Harrell, Abigail Estrada, Briana Daiss and Eloise Tribolet collected one hit apiece for the Thundering Herd.
  • Adams had Marshall's only RBI of the game.

  • The Spartans continue play at the Spartan Classic on Saturday afternoon hosting Winthrop in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
