Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team extended its winning streak to 12 games on Saturday afternoon following a doubleheader sweep of the Winthrop Eagles at Cyrill Stadium on day two of the Spartan Classic.
USC Upstate swept Winthrop by scores of 6-1 in game one and 10-2 in five innings of game two.
The Spartans improve to 12-0 on the season while the Eagles fall to 4-3 overall.
GAME ONE – WINTHROP 1, USC UPSTATE 6
Scoring Breakdown
- Bottom 1st – USC Upstate took an early 1-0 lead over Winthrop after scoring once in its half of the first. Ansley Gilstrap led off the inning with a single and advanced to third after a stolen base and throwing error. Kristen Wright singled her home the next at-bat.
- Bottom 3rd – The Spartans made it a 2-0 game after Gilstrap scored from third on a wild pitch by Eagle starter Kiley Majette. Gilstrap had drawn a leadoff walk and reached third on Wright's sacrifice bunt and a stolen base.
- Top 5th – Winthrop cut the USC Upstate lead to 2-1 in the fifth on a solo home run to begin the inning by Blake Wallert to left field.
- Bottom 5th – The Spartans broke the game open in the fifth courtesy of four runs to extend their lead out to 6-1. Megan Obier plated two of the runs as her two-RBI double to left center field brought in Wright and Karla Beasley. Obier scored the following at-bat on an RBI single by Brittany Case. Trish Webb, pinch-hitting for Kayla Hussey, drew a bases loaded walk to conclude the scoring.
Notables
- Erin Hill (4-0) picked up the win after allowing just one run on three hits, one walk and no strikeouts in six innings of work.
- Majette (2-1) suffered the loss throwing 4.2 innings and surrendered six runs on seven hits, four walks and one strikeout.
- Kelsey Sweatt came on in relief of Hill and threw one scoreless inning and allowed one hit.
- Wright and Logan Morris led USC Upstate offensively as both recorded two hits.
- Obier drove in a game-high two RBI while Wright, Case and Webb each contributed one RBI.
- Gilstrap finished the game with two runs scored.
- Four different Eagles recorded one hit and Wallert had the team's only RBI.
GAME TWO – WINTHROP 2, USC UPSTATE 10 (5)
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 1st – Winthrop struck first for two runs to begin the game on a two-RBI single to right field by Ashley Westbrooks.
- Bottom 1st – The Spartans responded by scoring 10 unanswered runs beginning with four in the bottom-half of the first to take a 4-2 lead. Case drove in three of the runs on her first home run of the season over the left field fence. Morris started the scoring with her RBI double to left field.
- Bottom 3rd – USC Upstate put up three runs in the third to go ahead 7-2. Morris plated Beasley for her second RBI of the game on a single to left center field. Webb was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Gilstrap turned in an RBI single to left field.
- Bottom 5th – The Spartans ended the game in the fifth registering three more runs to put the final score at 10-2. Gilstrap and Elisa Cecchetti both reached to start the inning on a walk and single, and were sacrificed ahead one base by Wright. All three runs scored on Beasley's team-leading sixth home run of the season to end the game.
Notables
- Christina Biggerstaff (4-0) went the distance pitching all five innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits, one walk and 11 strikeouts. Biggerstaff registered double-digit strikeouts in an appearance for the third time this season with all three coming in her last four appearances.
- Madyson Watson (1-2) suffered the loss allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits, two walks and one strikeout in 2.2 innings of work.
- Beasley and Case both drove in three runs each and scored twice to lead USC Upstate.
- The Spartans had three players compile two-hit performances in Gilstrap, Beasley and Morris.
- Morris added a two-RBI outing while Gilstrap and Webb had one apiece.
- Westbrooks went 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Eagles.
- With her three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, Beasley moves past former teammate, and current USC Upstate volunteer assistant coach, Kendall Settlemyre, into third place all-time in career home runs with 35.
UP NEXT
- Weather has altered the final day of the Spartan Classic on Sunday.
- The doubleheader originally scheduled against Presbyterian College at 1 p.m. has been canceled.
- The Spartans and Blue Hose will now play a single game on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. from Cyrill Stadium.
