Spartanburg, S.C. – Trailing 5-4 entering the sixth inning, the USC Upstate baseball team plated six runs in the frame and added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning as the Spartans claimed a 12-7 win over Ohio at Harley Park on Saturday afternoon.
USC Upstate improves to 10-8-1 while Ohio falls to 10-8.
Scoring Breakdown
- Bottom 1st – Toran Shahidi was hit by a pitch to open the inning and advanced to second on a Pat Raiff single. Shahidi scored on a Charlie Carpenter single before a walk to Kyle Gensler loaded the bases. Raiff scored on Mason Stewart's sacrifice fly, while Carpenter and Gensler scored on a Will Hardigree two-run double for a 4-0 USC Upstate lead.
- Top 3rd – A pair of singles followed by a two-out walk loaded the bases for the Bobcats. Trevor Hafner hit a bases-clearing double and scored on a Ryan Sargent base hit to tie the game.
- Top 4th – Dan McCauley led off the inning with a double and scored on a fielder's choice to give Ohio a 5-4 lead.
- Bottom 6th – Hardigree led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on Russell Schwertfeger's double. After a strikeout, Austin Morgan brought home Hardigree with a single to tie the game. Shahidi followed Morgan with a single that plated Schwertfeger for the go-ahead run. Raiff singled to load the bases before Morgan scored on a Carpenter sacrifice fly. A Gensler single brought home Shahidi, with the final two runs of the inning scoring on Ohio errors.
- Top 7th – Devon Garcia hit a two-run home run to center field to bring Ohio within three, 10-7.
- Bottom 8th – Raiff led off the inning with a walk and scored on a Carpenter double. Carpenter scored the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
Notables
- With the win, USC Upstate has won three consecutive weekend series.
- Gensler led the Spartans offensively, going 3-for-4 with three singles, two runs scored and an RBI.
- Carpenter finished 2-for-3 with a single, double, two runs scored and three RBI.
- Shahidi, Raiff, Hardigree, Schwertfeger and Morgan each had two hits.
- Rudy Rott went 3-for-5 with two singles, a double, run scored and RBI to lead Ohio.
- Trey Van Der Weide (2-2) earned the win, allowing two runs on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
- Cory Blessing (1-2) was charged with the loss after he allowed four runs on four hits with a strikeout in 0.1 innings.
