Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team continued its season-opening winning streak on Friday as the Spartans opened play at the Wings Etc. Classic with a sweep of the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers and Delaware State Hornets from Cyrill Stadium.
USC Upstate increases its winning streak to 15 straight games and improves to 15-0 on the season. Mount St. Mary's falls to 6-7 overall and Delaware State 0-11.
The Spartans defeated the Mountaineers 8-1 and followed with a 2-1 victory over the Hornets.
GAME ONE – MOUNT ST. MARY'S 1, USC UPSTATE 8
Scoring Breakdown
- Bottom 1st – USC Upstate scored twice and took an early 2-0 lead over Mount St. Mary's. Ansley Gilstrap led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and quickly stole second base. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Mountaineer throwing error. Megan Obier made it a 2-0 game with her RBI single to left field, scoring Kristen Wright who had struck out swinging but reached on a passed ball.
- Bottom 2nd – Wright extended the Spartans lead to 2-0 with her RBI single to center field. Gilstrap reached on a walk and stole second. She scored from second on Wright's single.
- Bottom 3rd – Logan Morris started the inning with a walk and was pinch-run for by Makenna Helton. Helton advanced to third on Obier's single and a wild pitch. She scored after stealing home on a throwback to the pitching circle by the Mount St. Mary's catcher.
- Top 4th – The Mountaineers made it a 4-1 game during the first at-bat when Lindsay Heinze homered to left field.
- Bottom 4th – USC Upstate answered with two more runs to make it a 6-1 game. Wright added her second RBI of the game with a single to center field as Kendsey Chappelear, who reached on an infield single, scored. Brittany Case added the second run with her bases loaded walk.
- Bottom 6th – Obier plated both runs in the sixth with her second home run of the season as the Spartans went in front 8-1. Morris came home on Obier's homer after her double to left field the previous at-bat.
Notables
- Christina Biggerstaff (6-0) remains unbeaten this season after tossing six innings and gave up one run on four hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
- Caylie Van Auken pitched a scoreless seventh inning and struck out one batter.
- Jordan Weaver (3-2) took the loss giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits, four walks and five strikeouts in four innings of work.
- Obier tied her career-high of four hits after going 4-for-4 in game one with three RBI and one run scored.
- Wright finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
- Chappelear contributed two hits while Gilstrap scored twice and Case posted one RBI.
- Heinze led Mount St. Mary's with two hits and one RBI.
GAME TWO – DELAWARE STATE 1, USC UPSTATE 2
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 2nd – Delaware State took a 1-0 lead in its half of the second inning off a USC Upstate error. Khaliyah Flournory began the frame with a single and went to third on a stolen base and single from Sabrina Quarles. Micaela Cummings popped out but the Spartan throwing error to home plate allowed Flournory to score from third.
- Bottom 4th – USC Upstate plated two runs to take a 2-1 lead with two outs. Chappelear started the scoring with her RBI double to left center field that brought home Case, who also doubled, from third. Wright then singled home Chappelear after her base hit to center field.
Notables
- Erin Hill (5-0) went the distance pitching all seven innings and surrendered one run (none earned) on three hits, two walks and one strikeout.
- Alexis Goldsby (0-4) suffered the loss giving up two runs on four hits, three walks and no strikeouts.
- Wright collected a team-best three hits for the Spartans and recorded one RBI.
- Chappelear also compiled one RBI while going 1-for-3 with one run scored.
- Karla Beasley added a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
- Flournory went 2-for-3 with one run scored for the Hornets.
