Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate senior pitcher Kevin Hickey threw a six-hit complete game shutout on Saturday afternoon as the Spartans defeated Dayton 8-0 at Harley Park.
USC Upstate improves to 12-11-1 while Dayton falls to 6-12.
Scoring Breakdown
- Bottom 1st – Toran Shahidi led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a Kyle Gensler single.
- Bottom 2nd – Austin Morgan was hit by a pitch with two outs and scored on a Chris Rodriguez double.
- Bottom 5th – Rodriguez reached on a leadoff single and advanced to third on a Pat Raiff base hit with one out. Following a hit batter that loaded the bases, Gensler hit a sacrifice fly to score Rodriguez. Mason Stewart followed with a two-run triple for a 5-0 USC Upstate lead.
- Bottom 6th – Austin Morgan hit his first collegiate home run, a solo blast, with one out.
- Bottom 8th – Russell Schwertfeger hit his team-leading fourth triple of the season and scored on an Austin Morgan single. Morgan would score on a wild pitch.
Notables
- Hickey (1-0) allowed six hits with a walk and five strikeouts to earn his first win of 2018. His longest outing prior to Saturday was 7.2 innings at Florida Gulf Coast on April 14, 2017.
- Gensler went 3-for-3 with three singles and two RBI.
- Morgan went 2-for-3 with a single, home run, three runs scored and two RBI.
- Stewart went 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.
- Shahidi went 1-for-5 with a double and run scored.
- Raiff finished 1-for-4 with a single and run scored.
- Connor Echols went 2-for-3 to lead Dayton.
- Dayton left seven runners on base while USC Upstate stranded five baserunners.
- Austin Cline (1-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
- Dayton loaded the bases prior to recording any outs in the sixth inning. Hickey got out of the jam with a foulout, a fielder's choice with the lead runner throw out at home plate, and a groundout.
