Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team scored 10 runs in the second inning en route to a 15-2 win over Dayton at Harley Park on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans claimed the non-conference series with Sunday's victory.
USC Upstate improves to 13-11-1 while Dayton drops to 6-13.
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 2nd – Riley Tirotta reached on an error and scored on a Takahiro Yamada single.
- Bottom 2nd – Kyle Gensler opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Gensler reached third on a Russell Schwertfeger single and scored on a single by Austin Morgan. Following a strikeout, Chris Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Toran Shahidi singled to score Schwertfeger. The Spartans scored a run on a passed ball before a Dayton error allowed two runs to score. Gensler recorded his second single of the inning to score Andres Kim before a Mason Stewart base hit plated Charlie Carpenter. Schwertfeger hit his team-leading third home run of the season, a three-run blast, for a 10-1 USC Upstate lead. The Spartans scored 10 runs on seven hits with the help of one Dayton error.
- Bottom 4th – Kim reached first on an error before moving to second on a wild pitch. Following a Carpenter single, Kim scored on a fielder's choice. Gensler scored on a sacrifice fly, with two more runs scoring as a result of a Rodriguez single.
- Top 5th – Mitchell Garrity was hit by a pitch and scored on a Brandon Smith double.
- Bottom 8th - Jeff Taylor led off the inning with a walk and scored on a Rodriguez single.

- The 15 runs scored by USC Upstate are a season-high.
- Schwertfeger went 3-for-4 with two singles, a home run, three runs scored and three RBI.
- Rodriguez finished 2-for-3 with two singles, a run scored and three RBI.
- Gensler and Stewart each went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
- Carpenter went 2-for-5 with two singles.
- The Spartans finished with 13 hits.
- Garrity went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles to lead Dayton.

- Jordan Marks (1-2) picked up his first collegiate win as he allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
- Peter Rozman (0-1) was charged with the loss after he allowed seven runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in 1.2 innings.
