Spartanburg, S.C. – Kennesaw State scored nine runs in the final four innings as the Owls defeated USC Upstate 9-4 in the ASUN Conference opener for both teams at Harley Park on Thursday evening.
Kennesaw State improves to 14-12 overall and 1-0 in league play while USC Upstate falls to 13-13-1 and 0-1.
Scoring Breakdown
- Bottom 4th – Pat Raiff reached on a double with one out. Charlie Carpenter followed with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field, for a 2-0 lead.
- Top 6th – Terence Norman drove in two runs with a two-out single.
- Top 7th – The Owls scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk and added three runs on a Jake Franklin three-run double.
- Top 9th – The Owls added two runs on a Griffin Helms double and another run on a Norman base hit.
- Bottom 9th – Raiff opened the inning with a single and scored on a Carpenter triple. Carpenter would score on a groundout.
Notables
- Raiff finished 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs scored.
- Carpenter went 2-for-4 with a home run, triple, two runs scored and three RBI.
- Austin Morgan and Russell Schwertfeger each had a single.
- Helms finished 2-for-4 with a single, double and three RBI
- Norman went 2-for-5 with two singles and three RBI.
- Franklin went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
- AJ Moore (3-0) earned the win as he allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
- Trey Van Der Weide (2-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout in 1.2 innings.
- Blake Whitney struck out seven batters as he scattered a walk and three hits in 5.0 innings.
- Kennesaw State left eight runners on base while USC Upstate stranded four baserunners.
