Spartanburg, S.C. – Andres Kim drove in three runs to lead the USC Upstate baseball team to a 9-3 win over Kennesaw State in ASUN Conference action on Friday night at Harley Park.

USC Upstate improves to 14-13-1 overall and 1-1 in league play while Kennesaw State drops to 14-13 and 1-1.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Bottom 1st – Toran Shahidi reached on an error but was retired on a fielder's choice. Pat Raiff scored on an Andres Kim single, followed by a Russell Schwertfeger single that scored Kyle Gensler.
  • Top 3rd – The Owls got on the board on a Tyler Simon groundout.
  • Top 4th – Kennesaw State tied the game on a Jake Franklin solo home run.
  • Bottom 5th – Charlie Carpenter reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on an error. Carpenter scored the go-ahead run on a Kim single.
  • Bottom 6th – The Spartans scored two runs on back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Carpenter and Gensler.
  • Top 7th – Daniel Seres reached on a one-out single and scored on a Simon base hit.
  • Bottom 8th – The Spartans scored runs on singles by Carpenter, Will Hardigree and Jake Bourke, and on a Kim sacrifice fly.

  • Kim went 2-for-4 with two singles and three RBI.
  • Carpenter went 2-for-4 with two singles, two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Hardigree finished 2-for-5 with two singles and an RBI.
  • Bourke went 2-for-5 with two singles, a run scored and an RBI.
  • The Spartans had five players finish with multi-hit games and had eight of nine starters finish with a hit.
  • Simon went 2-for-5 with two singles and two RBI to lead the Owls.
  • Kevin Hickey (2-0) claimed the win as he allowed three runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
  • Will Wheeler allowed one hit with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
  • Brooks Buckler (2-1) took the loss as he surrendered five runs, two earned, on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
  • USC Upstate left 13 runners on base while Kennesaw State stranded eight baserunners.
  • The teams combined for six errors in the game, four of which were made by Kennesaw State.
