USC Upstate Sweeps Stetson in Series-Opening Doubleheader

DeLand, Fla. – Logan Morris had a team-high five RBI and homered along with Karla Beasley to help lead the USC Upstate softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the Stetson Hatters opening a three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

USC Upstate improves to 31-16 on the season and 10-6 in league play while Stetson falls to 24-19 overall and 2-9 in the conference.

The Spartans began the series with a 10-4 victory in game one and rallied in the top of the seventh to win game two 6-5.

GAME ONE – USC UPSTATE 10, STETSON 4

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 1st – Brittany Case gave USC Upstate a 1-0 lead with one out on her RBI sacrifice fly to left field. Ansley Gilstrap, who led off the game with a walk, scored from third on Case's fly out.
  • Top 2nd – Morris extended the Spartans lead to 5-0 in the second after hitting a grand slam for her fifth home run of the season.
  • Top 3rd – USC Upstate made it a 6-0 game when Kristen Wright reached on a Stetson fielding error allowing pinch-runner Makenna Helton to score. Helton replaced Elisa Cecchetti on the bases after her one-out single to center field.
  • Top 4th – The Spartans took advantage of another Hatters miscue to go ahead 7-0 in the fourth. Case reached base on a one-out infield single and quickly stole second base. Case then stole third and scored on a Stetson error.
  • Top 6th – Beasley and Megan Obier each had an RBI in the sixth as USC Upstate plated three more runs to put the score at 10-0. Beasley started the scoring with her RBI single to center field scoring Wright. Tarynn Tirpak then pinch-ran for Beasley and came home on a passed ball. Obier followed with an RBI single to center field scoring Erin Hill, who pinch-ran for Morris after her single.
  • Bottom 6th – The Hatters cut the Spartans lead to 10-3 in the sixth on a three-run home run to center field by Devin Lewis.
  • Bottom 7th – Ashly Smith hit a solo home run to right field for Stetson and trimmed the score down to 10-4.

Notables

  • Christina Biggerstaff (15-8) picked up the win with her 18th complete game of the season and allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits, two walks and 12 strikeouts.
  • Jaime Tino (8-6) took the loss giving up five runs on one hit, eight walks and no strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
  • Biggerstaff's 12 strikeouts mark the seventh time this season the junior has recorded double-digit strikeouts in an appearance. She struck out 12 batters in two previous outings against East Tennessee State and North Florida.
  • Morris drove in four RBI for the third time this season after leading USC Upstate offensively with two hits in three plate appearances.
  • The Spartans also received one RBI each from Beasley, Case and Obier.
  • Gilstrap and Wright both scored two runs.
  • With her two stolen bases, Gilstrap moves past Heidi Gibbs (2006-09) into third place all-time at USC Upstate in career stolen bases with 96.
  • Smith and Molly McLaughlin post two hits apiece for the Hatters while Lewis had a team-high three RBI.

GAME TWO – USC UPSTATE 6, STETSON 5

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 1st - Beasley gave the Spartans an early 1-0 lead after hitting her team-leading 14th home run of the season to left field.
  • Bottom 3rd – Stetson scored five times in its half of the third and took a 5-1 lead over USC Upstate. Smith, Lewis, Lizzie Shubert and Holli Jones all had an RBI in the frame while Lewis later scored on a wild pitch.
  • Top 4th – The Spartans cut their deficit down to 5-2 after scoring once on a Hatter error, allowing Kayla Hussey to cross home plate. Hussey reached on a two-out single and moved to second when Kendsey Chappelear got on base after Stetson's first error of the inning.
  • Top 7th – USC Upstate rallied with four runs, all with two outs, in the seventh to go back ahead 6-5. Morris drove in Wright for the first run of the inning with an RBI single to center field and Case followed with another RBI single to center field to make it a one-run game. Pinch-hitter Kori Wancheck gave the Spartans a 6-5 lead on her RBI double.

Notables

  • Hill (9-3) earned the win in relief throwing 4.2 scoreless innings and gave up one hit and one walk while striking out three.
  • Tori Perkins (15-10) suffered the loss surrendering six runs (five earned) on 10 hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
  • Wright went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored.
  • Beasley, Morris, Case and Wancheck all had one RBI in the victory.
  • Beasley scored a team-high two runs.
  • With her home run in the first, Beasley now has 43 in her career and is three away from tying Stacey Berrong (1996-99) for second all-time in program history.
  • Smith and Lewis both collected two hits and one RBI for Stetson.
