LYNCHBURG, Va. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team drove through the pouring rain to knock off Liberty 3-2 in front of a crowd of 506 people at Osborne Stadium on Tuesday night.
The win gave the Spartans just their second road win of the season. USC Upstate has their first winning streak in the series against Liberty after the Spartans defeated the Eagles at home last season. The win also gave the Spartans their most wins since the 2015 campaign.
The USC Upstate offensive came out ready to play on Tuesday night as they attempted 11 shots in the opening half. The Spartans and the Eagles played to relative stalemate despite the Spartans having double-digit shots. In the 38

Joel Bunting kicked the ball off the goalies mitts and
Aidan Hill cleaned up the loose ball by kicking it past the right post for the opening goal of the game. USC Upstate went into the halftime break up 1-0 over Liberty.
In the second half the Spartans stayed aggressive on the offensive end and it paid off as
Javier Torres scored on a pass from
Pol Monells in the 52
nd minute. Two minutes later Monells attempted to score but had his shot deflected off the goalkeeper and Torres was their once again with the cleanup goal to put the Spartans ahead 3-0 in the 54
th minute of action.
The game remained a 3-0 advantage until the 67
th minute of action when Liberty's Shane Geisler chipped the ball in over the Spartans defense from 30-yards out to put the Eagles on the board. With four minutes to go in the contest Liberty scored once again to make it a 3-2 game before the final horn sounded in the 90
th minute.
Stats of the Game:
- Torres' two goals scored tied Pascal Corvino for the season high mark for goals in a game with two.
- Torres led the Spartan offense with five total shots and four shots on goal coming off the bench.
- USC Upstate outshot Liberty 17-13 overall and 12-2 in shots on goal.
- The Spartans were once again the aggressive team on Tuesday evening as they committed 13 fouls in the match.
