Spartanburg, S.C.— The USC Upstate men's soccer team defeated Wofford 3-2 on Saturday night in front of a raucous crowd at County University Soccer Stadium.
In the opening half of play, The Spartan attack continued their momentum from their last match against Liberty. If you blinked, you would have missed this goal as
Pascal Corvino found himself outside of the 18-yard box and capitalized on his opportunity by rocketing the ball into the right side of the net to put the Spartans up 1-0 in the first two minutes of the match.
Wofford quickly felt the pressure of being down early in the match and responded with an uptick in their attack. The Terriers recorded five total shots within 7 minutes.
Felipe Baeza was up for the challenge as Baeza didn't allow any goals and recorded a pair of saves.
The Terriers put the Spartan defense under pressure in an attempt to equalize the score. The Spartans tried to slow down the Wofford counterattack but fouled the Terriers in the box, rewarding a penalty kick. Lucas Altman stepped up and equalized the score to 1-1 in the 41st minute of the match.
Going into the half, the Spartans and Terriers were tied at 1-1. USC Upstate had eight total shots with 5 of them on goal.
Felipe Baeza was able to record four saves in the first half.
After the halftime break, both teams traded off early offensive opportunities but weren't able to capitalize on them. In the 63rd minute,
Michael Chappelear was able to break away from a Terrier defender and keeper to put the Spartans back up 2-1. Wofford refused to stay down as Maceon Ureta was able to clean up on a failed clearance to equalize the score at 2-2 in the 77th minute.
The Spartans quickly responded to the goal scored by Wofford and had no interest in going into overtime.
Pol Monells defeated a Wofford defender and had a one on one opportunity with the goalkeeper but was fouled in the box to reward Upstate with a late penalty.
Pol Monells stepped up and scored the game-winning goal to put the Spartans up 3-2 over the Wofford Terriers.
The Spartans improved their overall record to 5-10 and are now 2-1 against Wofford in the last three matchups and haven't lost a home matchup against Wofford since 2015.
