Spartans Look to Send Seniors Out on a High Note

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team will travel Winthrop University for a 1 p.m. kickoff in the final game of the 2019 season.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow USC Upstate will be saying goodbye to eight seniors who set the foundation for the program to succeed in years to come. Although they did not have the season many had hoped they still played a major role in the Spartans 11 win season a year ago.

The last time USC Upstate and Winthrop faceoff the game ended up being a thriller for Spartan fans. USC Upstate trailed 2-1 going into the 80th minute of action, Abbie Ellis (Clemmons, N.C.) scored her second goal of the night to tie the game. Three minutes later Montanna Hill (Mount Airy, Md.) scored the go-ahead goal and in the 88th minute Emma Honis (Ocoee, Fla.) gave the Spartans an insurance goal over the Eagles.

Ellis, Hill and Honis have been the offensive leaders for the Spartans all season. However, the Spartans are looking to kick an eight game losing streak and end the season with their first conference win of the year. USC Upstate has had to wait a whole week since losing to Gardner-Webb on Senior Day last Saturday. The Spartans lost in a 3-2 decision to the Runnin' Bulldogs who scored the go-ahead goal in the 59th minute of action.

USC Upstate will look to spoil Winthrop's Senior Day on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles are coming off a 2-0 win over UNC Asheville at Eagle Field. Both goals were scored in the opening 15 minutes of action for Winthrop. The Eagles have not lost at home since September 4th of this season. Gabi Hull leads the Eagle offense in goals (6), points (13), shots (34) and shots on goal (20). Keeley Leising leads the team in assists with 10 on the season and is second on the team in points with 12. Ashlynn Harris has played in 14 games this season, making 62 saves and recording four shutouts on the season.

USC Upstate and Winthrop will kick things off at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. Links to the game can be found at www.upstatespartans.com.
