Spartanburg, S.C.— The USC Upstate men's soccer team fell 6-4 to Winthrop on Saturday night at County University Soccer Stadium.
In the opening half of play, the Eagles got off to a fast start as they were rewarded an early corner kick and capitalized on it to put themselves up 1-0 in the first three minutes of the match. The Eagles continued their attack on the Spartan defense as Jordan Walshaw scored the second goal of the night 13 minutes into the match.
Despite a rough start for the Spartans, USC Upstate was able to keep their heads level and stay composed.
Pol Monells continued his hot streak by ripping a shot outside the 18-yard box in the 21st minute to put the Spartans on the board with a score of 1-2. Monells seemed to spark life into the Spartan attack as
Eirik Abney would send a great cross into the box that was flicked by
Mario Arrocha to Aiden Hill, who was able to head the ball into the right side of the net to level the score at 2-2.
Going into the half, the score remained tied at 2-2. The Spartans recorded 7 total shots with 5 of those shots being on goal. There were three total yellow cards given in the first half, two USC Upstate, and one to Winthrop.
