Spartanburg, S.C.— The USC Upstate Men's soccer team will be back in action at County University Soccer Stadium in a Tuesday night matchup against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs.
USC Upstate (2-7) and Gardner-Webb (5-4-1) are playing for the 10th time in program history. In their most recent matchup, the Spartans fell to the Bulldogs on the road 0-3. The Bulldogs lead the Division I era series at (5-3-1) over the past 9 matchups. Although the Spartans may trail in the Division I era series, they have been dominant at home with a record of 2-1-1 while facing the Bulldogs.
The Spartans are coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss in an away matchup against Campbell University. This would be the fourth time this season that the Spartans fell in overtime to an opponent and the fifth time this season the Spartans fell to an opponent trailing by one goal. The Spartan attack was led by Mario Arroacha and
Pol Monells who both had two total shots and one shot on goal for Monells.
Although the Spartans fell to the Camels, their defenders and goalkeeper continued to stand strong. Going into the matchup against Campbell, the Camels had an average of 1.64 goals per game.
Luca Bulfon and the Spartan defense were able to hold the Camels to just 1 goal in double overtime. Bulfon was able to record 4 total saves including an excellent save on a penalty kick. These 4 saves add to Bulfon's total of 28 saves this season. As a team, the Spartans have 43 total saves which ranks third in the Big South Conference.
Gardner-Webb is 5-4-1 on the season after winning in overtime against Radford University. The Bulldogs are tied for first in the Big South with a record of 2-0 against Big South opponents. Gardner-Webb has averaged 1.80 goals per game and has allowed 2.10 goals per game to their opponents.
The Bulldogs top point scorer is Oskar Wang who has netted 6 total goals for the bulldogs along with 2 assists. Similar to USC Upstate, the Bulldogs have the luxury of having two goalkeepers. Daniel Husa has a total of 32 saves and Mallel Rios has a total of 7 saves. The Bulldogs are led by long-time head coach, Tony Setzer in his 32
nd season.
