SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team set two Division-I era records on Saturday night against the Mars Hill Lions in an 89-31 win inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
Freshman center
Quadijah Moore (Greenwood, S.C.) had a stellar night in the paint for the Spartans. The Palmetto State native scored 23 points in the paint on 10-of-11 shooting from the field. The Emerald high school graduates .909 field goal percentage was the fourth highest in program history. Moore's night did not stop there however, the freshman center set a new Division-I era for blocks in a game with six. Moore is the first person to accomplish this feat since Tammy Smith recorded six blocks on the road against Augusta State in 1998.
USC Upstate (3-1) tied the school record for blocks in a game with 10 swats on the night. The last time the Spartans hit double-digit blocks in a game it occurred on the road in Jacksonville during the 2015-2016 season. The Spartans also did a great job of passing the ball around and getting everyone involved. USC Upstate set a new Division-I era record with 28 assists in the contest. Every player that played at least two minutes on the court recorded an assist on the night. The last time USC Upstate recorded 28 assists in a match was in 1995 against Lees-McRae.
USC Upstate got off to a great start on Saturday night as they sprinted out to a 24-7 first quarter lead. The Spartans went into the halftime break up 42-9 on Mars Hill (0-4). USC Upstate scored an additional 47 points in the second half to pick-up their third win of the season. The Spartans won every major statistical category, scoring 26 points off turnovers, recording 5 second chance points and accumulating 15 points on fast break opportunities. USC Upstate also dominated the paint with 38 points, the Spartans bench also outscored Mars Hill with 35 points in the contest.
Brianna Lewis (Chicago, Ill.) was the second leading scorer for the Spartans, finishing the night with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The senior guard recorded a new career high in made three-pointer attempts with four made baskets on the night. For the fourth consecutive game
Kathryn Kirkwood (Milwaukee, Wisc.) was the top option off the Spartans bench. The sophomore forward scored 12 points and hauled in six rebounds in the match. Kirkwood is now averaging 10.5 points per game coming off the bench for the Spartans.
Maya Timberlake (Norcross, Ga.) played a career high 26 minutes and scored a career high 9 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field. Timberlake tied for the team lead in assists with four dish outs on the night.
Michaela Gibbons (Troutman, N.C.) led the team in rebounds with eight boards on the night. This is the second time this season Gibbons has recorded at least eight rebounds in a match.
