BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – For the second consecutive season the USC Upstate volleyball team completed a season sweep of Gardner-Webb, this afternoon the Spartans defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs 3-1 inside Paul Porter Arena.
A trio of Spartans ended the match with double-digit kills with
Emily Russell leading the way with 18 kills. Senior middle blocker
Gloria Ikenegbu ended with 13 kills and
Mikenzie Young-Mullins contributed 12 kills in the victory. Young-Mullins was one of two players with a double-double in the match, the sophomore outside hitter also led the team with 14 digs in the match. Freshman setter
Annalisa Mendoza finished the match with 41 assists and 12 digs.
In the opening set the Spartans got off to a fast start and let Gardner-Webb make costly mistakes. As a team USC Upstate recorded 11 kills in the opening set, while Gardner-Webb recorded 12 attack errors in the opening set. After a small set back in the second set the Spartans won the final two sets to take home the victory. USC Upstate ended the day with a .215 hitting percentage.
