USC Upstate Looking to Bounce Back Against ETSU

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer program hits the road for the first time this season with a quick jaunt up interstate 26 to take on East Tennessee State University tomorrow night at 7 p.m.

USC Upstate (0-1-0) is looking to bounce back after a heartbreaking loss on Sunday afternoon to American University. The Eagles scored the opening goal in the first 15 minutes of action, then in the 79th minute of action senior Emma Honis (Ocoee, Fla.) laced a ball into the upper right hand corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. The game appeared to be heading into overtime but American's Morgan Brinson flipped the ball into the box and Fisayo Iluyomade headed the ball past Logan Pace (Belmont, N.C.) with less than three minutes to go in the game.

Honis and Delaney Bussey (Brighton, Mich.) lead the team with three shots each. Bussey recorded a pair of shots on goal in the Sunday setback against American. Pace played all 90 minutes against American and recorded seven saves in the contest. Pace currently ranks second in the conference in saves per game and fifth in the conference in total saves.

ETSU (1-1-0) is coming off a 1-0 overtime loss to fellow Big South program UNC Asheville. On Sunday afternoon the Bulldogs scored in the 96th minute to claim their first victory of the season. The Buccaneers outshot UNC Asheville 13-12 overall and 4-3 with shots on goal. ETSU also attempted seven corner kicks in the contest.

The Buccaneers opened the season with a 4-0 win over Division II opponent King University (Tenn.). Momoko Horiuchi, Maegan Sours and Pamela Penaloza all scored first half goals to give ETSU a commanding 3-0 advantage heading the halftime break. Caitlin Beval scored the lone goal of the second half to complete the scoring for the Buccaneers.

So far this season, Sours leads the team in shots on goal with four. Sarah Connolly leads the team with eight overall shots taken on the season. As a team this year the Buccaneers have outscored opponents 4-1, out-shot opponents 37-15 and have taken 16 corners this season. ETSU has only registered four saves this season.

This will be the tenth meeting all-time between USC Upstate and ETSU. The Spartans are currently winless against the Buccaneers but they have been close their previous two attempts. Last season Isabel Hodgson scored an 18th minute goal for the Buccaneers off a corner kick. Otherwise, the two sides were deadlocked in total shots with 10 each.

The last time USC Upstate traveled to ETSU was back in August of 2016. That season the Spartans lost 1-0 to the Buccaneers, Georgia Allen scored in the 52nd minute of the match to give ETSU the victory. Kate Winegarner led the team with a pair of shots and Brooke Bailey registered 13 saves in 90 minutes of action.
