Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Pace’s Historic Night is One for the Ages against ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Sophomore goalkeeper Logan Pace (Belmont, N.C.) recorded 12 saves in a 0-0 double overtime tie to East Tennessee State University on Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 372 people.

Pace's 12 saves place her in a tie for second with Rachel Collins on the school's All-Time single game saves list. Until tonight Collins was the only Spartan goalkeeper to record double-digit saves in program history. Collins recorded her 12 saves against Florida Gulf Coast on October 10, 2010.

For the first time in series history USC Upstate and ETSU battled to scoreless tie. For the Spartans this is their first non-losing effort against the Buccaneers since the start of the series in 2009.

The first 45 minutes of the game were more eventful for the USC Upstate defense than the USC Upstate offense. In the first half the ETSU offense recorded nine shots, four shots on goal and seven corner kicks. Pace stood strong in the net and made a quartet of saves to keep the first half a scoreless affair between the two squads.

The Spartans offense sprung to life in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Freshman forward Kirsten Nolan (Johannesburg, South Africa) registered a pair of shots and senior Delaney Bussey (Brighton, Mich.) added a shot giving the USC Upstate offense a spark.

In the 75th minute of action Stephanie Linton (Odessa, Fla.) checked in to the game and recorded the Spartans first shot on goal of the match. The shot resulted in the Spartans second corner kick of the night. Pace recorded an additional five saves in the second half, making her total nine at the end of regulation.

Neither USC Upstate nor ETSU found the back of the net in regulation and the two teams headed to overtime. In the opening five minutes of the game senior Abbie Ellis (Clemmons, N.C.) almost ended it with a shot on goal. Pace registered an additional two saves in the overtime period, increasing her total to 11 saves on the night.

In the second overtime period Pace recorded her 12th and final save of the night in the 101st minute of the match. Moments later Montanna Hill (Mount Airy, MD) and Courtney Cranmer (Oakville, Ontario) both took shots in the second overtime period.

Stats of the Match:
  • The Spartans were outshot by ETSU 23-9 and 12-3 in shots on goal during the match.
  • The Buccaneers recorded 10 corners in the match, while USC Upstate posted five corners in the match.
  • Linton, Nolan and Hill all recorded a pair of shots to lead the Spartans offense. Sarah Connolly led the ETSU offense with six shots overall and three shots on goal.
