Mendoza Records First Career Double-Double, USC Upstate Falls to George Washington

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Annalisa Mendoza collected her first career double-double on Saturday morning as the USC Upstate volleyball team continued play at the Pirate Invitational falling 3-0 (23-25, 17-25, 17-25) to the George Washington Colonials from Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

 

USC Upstate falls to 1-7 on the season while George Washington improves to 4-5 overall.

 

The teams traded the opening 10 points of the first set when Emily Russell tied the score at 5-5 with her kill. The Spartans then recorded four straight points, behind the serving of McKenna Kirkpatrick, to go ahead 9-5. Kirkpatrick maintained USC Upstate's lead at four points twice midway with the last coming at 17-13 following her kill. The Spartans would extend their lead back to four points, 21-17, after a Colonial attack error. George Washington closed out the set on an 8-2 run to secure the 25-23 victory.

 

Russell cut USC Upstate's deficit to 4-3 to start the second set with her kill. After the Colonials went in front 9-5, Gloria Ikenegbu made the score 10-9 after her kill. The Spartans would then tie the score at 13-13 midway on a George Washington attack error. The Colonials broke the set open the following eight points, scoring four in a row at one point, to take a 21-14 lead. George Washington went on to win the set 25-17.

 

The Colonials opened the third set on an 8-3 run before USC Upstate rallied with four straight points and got to within 8-7 after a kill by Kirkpatrick. George Washington responded with an 8-4 run to extend its lead out to 16-11. The Spartans got as close as two points, 16-14, midway after Mikenzie Young-Mullins connected on a kill. The Colonials concluded the set on a 9-3 run and won the set 25-17 to capture the 3-0 match victory.

 

Stats of the Match

·         For the third straight match, and fourth time overall this season, Kirkpatrick recorded double-digit kills, finishing with a team-high 10.

·         Mendoza compiled her first career double-double tallying 25 assists and a career-high 11 digs.

·         Young-Mullins added 10 digs.

·         Skylar Iott led George Washington with a match-high 17 kills.

·         Jaimeson Lee had a double-double of 35 assists and 10 digs.

·         Bella Bowman finished with a match-high 17 digs.

·         USC Upstate held a 6.0-4.0 advantage in total team blocks for the match.

 

Up Next

·         The Spartans close out play at the Pirate Invitational at 7 p.m. Saturday evening against host East Carolina.
