SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team concludes a four-match road trip on Tuesday evening when it travels to Greensboro, N.C. to face the North Carolina A&T Aggies in non-conference play at 6 p.m. from the Ellis F. Corbett Sports Center.
USC Upstate (1-8) played its final tournament of the season last weekend going 1-2 at the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C. The Spartans recorded their first victory of the season, and first under head coach Ronda Shirley, last Friday with a 3-2 victory over Norfolk State. McKenna Kirkpatrick, Annalisa Mendoza and Mikenzie Young-Mullins each recorded a double-double at the Pirate Invitational. Mendoza set a new career-high of 52 assists against East Carolina.
Emily Russell was named as USC Upstate's representative on the Pirate Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Russell leads the Spartans this season with 90 kills and is averaging 2.73 kills per set. She also has a team-leading 34 total blocks (seven solo, 27 assisted). Mendoza has dished out 156 assists while Mackenzie Marcum contributes 126 digs.
North Carolina A&T currently sits at 2-8 this season after winning two matches last weekend against Gardner-Webb and Alabama A&M at the Wofford Invitational. Courteney Pitts leads the team offensively with 117 kills and is averaging 3.55 kills per set. Edie Brewer has dished out 184 assists while Andrea Laboy-Rivera contributes 121 digs and Shaylynn Hall 25 total blocks. The Aggies are under the direction of ninth-year head coach Hal Clifton.
USC Upstate is facing North Carolina A&T for the fourth time in program history and leads the all-time series 3-0. The Spartans defeated the Aggies 3-0 last season in Spartanburg.
USC Upstate returns home on Friday evening to host Alabama A&M at 6 p.m.
