SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team is looking to get back on the winning track against Wofford on Wednesday night at County University Soccer Stadium.
USC Upstate (1-2-2) and Wofford (3-3-0) are meeting for the ninth time in program history. The Terriers currently hold a 7-0-1 record over the Spartans dating back to the 2009 season. However, the Spartans have come close the past two seasons. In 2018 the Terriers held on for a 2-1 victory and in 2017 team Wofford defeated USC Upstate 3-2 at County University Soccer Stadium. In both games the Spartans held early leads but watched Wofford come back in the second half to score the game winning goal.
The Spartans are coming off a 3-0 loss to American on Sunday afternoon. For USC Upstate this was their first shutout loss of the season. Last season, the Spartans were shutout by three or more goals on two different occasions, in both instances USC Upstate responded with a victory in the next game.
Offensively,
Emma Honis (Ocoee, Fla.) leads the team in a number of categories, goals scored (3), points (6), total shots (12) and shots on goal (5). Honis currently ranks second in the Big South in total goals, goals per game and ranks third in points per game.
Montanna Hill (Mount Airy, Md.) is currently second on the team in goals (2), assists (1), points (5), shots (8) and shots on goal (4). Ellis and
Stephanie Linton (Odessa, Fla.) are currently tied for the team lead in assists with two each.
The Spartans scoring offense currently ranks 75
th nationally and is second in the Big South with two goals per game. The only team ahead of USC Upstate is Campbell who ranks first in the conference with 2.40 goals per contest.
On the defensive side of the ball the Spartans back line is one of the cleanest in the nation averaging 7.25 fouls per game. Pace is once again nationally ranked in a number categories including being ranked 14
th in save percentage (.902), ninth in total saves (37) and fourth in saves per game (37.00).
Wofford is coming off a 4-0 road loss to Campbell on Sunday afternoon. The Camels scored three second half goals and outshot the Terriers 23-11. USC Upstate is the final Big South opponent for the Terriers, Wofford is currently 2-3 against Big South School's.
Despite being outshot 95-57 the Terriers have only been outscored 12-10 in the early portion of the season. The Spartans will need to focus on Katie Gilligan tomorrow afternoon. Gilligan currently leads the team in goals (5), assists (1), points (11), shots on goal (7) and game winning goals (2). Eva Dailey is currently second on the team in points (3), shots on goal (3) and currently leads the team in total shots with nine.
In goal this season the Terriers have played both Maria Mon and Kelly Hogan. Mon has started four of the five games and has allowed seven goals on 55 shots. Mon also leads the team in saves with 16 on the season.
