Spartans look to Spark a winning streak in a Saturday night showdown with Furman

Spartanburg, S.C The USC Upstate Men's soccer team will travel to Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium to face the Furman Paladins on Saturday evening.

 

USC Upstate (1-3-0) and Furman (4-2-1) are playing for the 12th time in program history. The Spartans fell to the Paladins 0-1 in their previous matchup in 2018. Furman leads the all-time series 7-3-2 over the previous twelve matchups.

 

The Spartans are coming off their first win of the season against the Stetson Hatters on Sunday, September 15th. The Spartans were able to defeat the Hatters 2-0 in electrifying fashion. The first goal was scored by Moss Lewis (Wilmington, N.C.) from a cross delivered by Pol Monells (Barcelona, Spain) and the second goal was a fantastic shot outside of the 18-yard box by Roberto Umana (Spartanburg, S.C.) that was assisted by Solomon Constant (Fairfield, Iowa). This would be Lewis and Umana's first goal of the season and their collegiate careers. 

 

Felipe Baeza (Santiago, Chile) made his first start of the season totaling 5 saves that led to his first clean sheet of the season. Umana and Lewis are tied for team-high goals and points with one goal each and two points. Constant and Monells are tied the for team-high in assist with a one each.

 

Furman is 4-2-1 on the season after losing 0-3 to the South Carolina Gamecocks, which snapped their four-game winning streak. The Paladins have netted 16 total goals and have conceded 14, giving them +2 goal differential. Furman is led by their top goal and point scorer, Cole McLagan who has recorded a total of 10 points and has netted 5 goals for the Paladins. Furman also has 8 total players who have scored this season. 

 

The Paladins like to switch up their goalkeepers with Max Fisher playing five games and Ben Hale playing two games. Max fisher leads the team in saves with 11 and has a 1.69 GAA followed by Ben Hale's 8 saves and a 2.50 GAA. The Paladins are coached by 25th-year head coach Doug Allison.

 

 USC Upstate and Furman will kick things off tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium. Tickets for the event can be purchased at www.furmanpaladins.com and links to the live stats and video stream of the game can be found at www.upstatespartans.com.
