Spartans Looking to Pillage Pirates on Saturday Night

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's soccer team will look to keep their winning streak alive against Hampton University on Saturday night at County University Soccer Stadium.
 
USC Upstate (2-2-2) is 2-0 all-time against Hampton University dating back to the 2017 season. The Spartans have outscored the Pirates 7-2 over the course of the series. Last season, USC Upstate shutout Hampton 3-0 in their first meeting as Big South opponents. The Spartans scored a trio of goals in the opening 10 minutes of the ball game and never looked back. Abbie Ellis (Clemmons, N.C.) led the charge with a pair of goals in the third and ninth minute of the contest. Emma Honis (Ocoee, Fla.) added a goal and Montanna Hill (Mount Airy, Md.) led the team in assists with two on the night.
 
2017 was the last time these two teams met at County University Soccer Stadium. Once again the Spartans came away victorious with a 4-2 win over Hampton. Honis scored a pair of goals to jump start the USC Upstate offense and Erin Wright (Huntersville, N.C.) added an insurance goal in the 68th minute. An own goal from Hampton in the 82nd minute of the contest gave the Spartans a 4-0 lead with eight minutes to go in the game. Hampton scored a pair of goals within four minutes of each other but time ran out before the comeback could be complete.
 
The Spartans are coming off a rivalry win against Wofford on Wednesday night. USC Upstate defeated the Terriers 2-1 in front of a raucous home crowd at County University Soccer Stadium, Ellis scored a pair of goals and became the school's all-time leading goal scorer. Logan Pace (Belmont, N.C.) once again had another great night in goal for the Spartans, collecting seven saves in the contest.
 
Ellis now leads or is tied for the team lead in numerous offensive categories including, goals (3), assists (2), points (8) and game winning goals (2). Honis is tied for the team lead in goals (3) but leads the team in shots (16) and shots on goal (6). Honis is currently second on the team in assists and total points with seven.
 
Pace currently ranks nationally in three different categories this season. The junior goalkeeper ranks 35th nationally in save percentage (.862), 12th nationally in total saves (50) and 6th nationally in saves per game. As a team the Spartans rank 3rd nationally in saves per game (8.50).
 
Hampton comes into Saturday night's matchup riding a six game losing streak. The Pirates won their season opener against VMI and have scored just two goals on the season. Hampton's most recent loss came against ETSU on Wednesday evening. The Pirates gave up two first half goals and were outshot 21-6 during the game.
 
This season Hampton has been outscored 19-2 and has been outshot 96-55. Ayana Garvin and Kynnedy Waldon lead the team in goals scored (1) and total points (2). Isobel Finnegan leads the team in total shots (11) and shots on goal (5). Three different goalkeepers have seen action for the Pirates this season. Maya Andrews has started every game this season and has recorded 38 saves on 87 shots faced.
