Spartans Heartbroken in Double Overtime Loss to UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team appeared to be on their way to a third straight tie on the road, but a UNC Asheville goal in the 107th minute gave the Bulldogs a gut wrenching victory over the Spartans.
 
For USC Upstate (3-3-2, 1-1-0 BSC) this is their first loss to UNC Asheville (3-7-0, 1-1-0 BSC) in three seasons. This is the first overtime loss of the season for USC Upstate, coming into the matchup the Spartans were 1-0-2.
 
In the first half against UNC Asheville the Spartans and Bulldogs played to a scoreless stalemate with each side having opportunities to score in the opening half. Stephanie Linton (Odessa, Fla.) paced the Spartans attack with three shots on and a shot on target in the opening stanza. As a team USC Upstate recorded five total shots in the half.
 
On the other side of the ball the Bulldogs spread the ball around had seven different players attempt shots in the half. UNC Asheville recorded 11 total shots in the half and had a quartet of shots on frame against the Spartans defense. USC Upstate starting goalkeeper Logan Pace (Belmont, N.C.) stood strong and saved all four shots in the opening half. The Bulldogs controlled the possession in the opening half registering 56 percent of the total possession time.
 
The second half was not much different from the first half as the two teams remained scoreless. UNC Asheville outshot the Spartans 7-3 in the second half and forced the Pace to make five saves in the half. The Bulldogs became more physical in the second half recording five fouls in the stanza. For the third consecutive road game and the second consecutive game the Spartans headed to overtime against an opponent.
 
In the first overtime period both teams once again had opportunities to end the game. With less than three minutes to go in the period Natasha Ferreira had an opportunity outside the 18-yard box but the shot sailed high over the Bulldogs goal. The two squads went into the second overtime period still searching for the first goal of the contest.
 
The two teams appeared to be heading towards a tie in the second overtime period. Then UNC Asheville's Alice Walker found Gillian Oyos for the game winning goal in the 107th minute of the contest.
 
Stats of the Match:
  • Logan Pace recorded 11 saves in the match, this is her third double-digit save game of the season.
  • USC Upstate was outshot 21-9 on the night and 12-5 with shots on frame.
  • Stephanie Linton led the Spartans offense with three shots and Kirsten Nolan had a team high two shots on goal.
  • Maya Gutman led the Bulldogs with five total shots and four shots on goal.
