Spartans prepare for Monday night showdown with Clemson

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the third consecutive match the USC Upstate men's soccer team will be traveling away from the friendly confines of County University Soccer Stadium, on Monday night the Spartans will have a date in Death Valley with Clemson University.

USC Upstate (0-2-0) and Clemson (3-0-0) are playing for just the third time in program history. The Spartans and the Tigers have not met since the 2013 regular season, which ended with a 2-0 Tiger win. Clemson leads the all-time series 2-0 and has outscored USC Upstate 3-0 over the previous two matchups.

The Spartans are coming off their second consecutive overtime loss this season. On Friday night USC Upstate took South Carolina into extra time but came up short after allowing a 98th minute goal. If the Spartans are able to score on Monday night it will be their first goal of the season.

Luca Bulfon (Italy) has stood strong in the goal for the Spartans this season. Bulfon has faced 30 shots this season and has allowed just two goals so far. The Italian has yet to allow a goal in regulation and the two goals that he has allowed came off of defensive miscues.

On the offensive side of the ball for the Spartans Pol Monells (Barcelona, Spain) has been the go to guy so far. Although he has not scored yet this season, Monells currently leads the team in total shots (5) and shots on goal (3).

For Clemson this is their fourth consecutive home match to start the season. The Tigers took down South Carolina in their season opener and have beaten Detroit Mercy and UNC-Greensboro as well. Clemson has outscored their opposition 14-2 this season, with the bulk of their goals coming in an 8-0 win over Detroit Mercy.

Grayson Barber currently leads the Clemson offense with four goals this season. Barber opened up the season with a pair of goals against South Carolina and has currently scored a goal in three consecutive matches. Barber has taken eight total shots this season and has six shots that have been on goal so far this year.

The Tigers starting goal keeper George Marks has not seen much action this season. In three games Marks has allowed just a pair of goals, but more impressively he has only had to make a single save this season.

USC Upstate and Clemson will kick things off tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at Historic Riggs Field. Tickets for the event can be purchased at www.clemsontigers.com and links to the livestats and video stream of the game can be found at www.upstatespartans.com.
