Men’s Basketball Preview: Spartans Looking to Rattle Radford on Thursday Night

Game Notes: USC Upstate, Radford

Series History
This is the second all-time meeting between USC Upstate and Radford. The Highlanders took the only meeting last season inside the G.B. Hodge Center 79-72. A trio of Spartans reached double-figures in the loss, Deion Holmes (13), Malik Moore (13) and Everette Hammond (10). A win on Thursday would give their Spartans their first ever win over Radford and would give them three conference wins for the first time since the 2016-17 season.

Last time out
UPSTATE – USC Upstate is coming off an 83-73 victory over Hampton University. Four Spartans reached double-figures in the victory, Everette Hammond (20), Tommy Bruner (16), Brandon Martin (11) and Thomas Booker (10). Bruner set a new career high in both free throws made (10) and free throws attempted (10). Cartier Jernigan had the best all-around stat line of the night with 9-points, 9-rebounds, 6-assists and a pair of blocks in the win.

Radford – Radford is 8-7 overall this season and 3-0 in Big South competition with wins over High Point, Gardner-Webb and Campbell. In the Highlanders last game against Campbell they came away with a 68-63 victory over the Camels. Carlik Jones scored 22-points and hauled in 7-rebounds in the victory. Jones was also named Big South Player of the Week for his efforts on the court to help keep the Highlanders undefeated in conference play.

Ones to watch
UPSTATEEverette Hammond currently leads the team with 14.4 points per contest and he has scored at least 20-points in four games this season. Hammond has reached double-figures seven out of the past eight games. Tommy Bruner has emerged as the complimentary scorer for the Spartans, Bruner is averaging 11.6 points per contest and has scored at least 14-points in three straight contests.

Radford – Jones currently leads the team in three-different categories points (18.6), assists (79) and steals (23). Travis Fields Jr. is second on the team in points scored with 12.2 points per game and Devine Eke leads the team in total rebounds (93) and blocked shots (8).

UP next for the Spartans
USC Upstate will hit the road this weekend to play Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
 
The Spartans next home game will be against Hampton on Monday, January 20, 2020. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
