Spartans Drop Contest to Winthrop

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore center Barrett Herring tied her career-high of eight rebounds Thursday evening, but the USC Upstate women's basketball team fell 52-38 to Winthrop inside the G.B. Hodge Center.

Herring won the opening tip-off and Jada Logan got USC Upstate (6-8, 1-4 BSC) on the board two minutes later with a layup from Anda Kuzmina. A few moments later, Michaela Gibbons knocked down a 3-pointer to bring USC Upstate within two points of Winthrop (6-7, 3-1 BSC) and send the Spartans into a media timeout with some momentum. Quadijah Moore came out of the timeout with a layup to tie things up at nine points each, but USC Upstate trailed the Eagles 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Winthrop opened the second period by outscoring USC Upstate 5-1, but after Logan's jumper with 6:07 remaining, four different Spartans found the net as both teams exchanged baskets through the back half of the quarter. The period was capped off by Moore's layup from Gibbons to send the Spartans into the halftime break down 27-21.

Logan led all scorers in the first half with eight points, six of them coming in the second quarter. Herring collected four rebounds while Moore had six points and a block.

The Spartans and Eagles once again went back-and-forth to open the third frame, but both teams entered a scoring drought midway through the quarter that lasted just over four minutes. A jumper from Winthrop's Anika Riley with 54 seconds left in the period ended the drought and closed a 6-0 run to put the Eagles up 40-27. Kathryn Kirkwood got a pair of points back for the Spartans with a layup heading into the final period.

Gibbons chipped away at Winthrop's lead with a 3-pointer a couple of minutes into the fourth quarter and Moore collected a pair of layups in the frame, but USC Upstate ultimately fell 52-38 to the Eagles.
