Women's Basketball Preview: Spartans Seek to Sweep Bucs

Series History
This is the 15th all-time meeting between USC Upstate and Charleston Southern dating back to Dec. 8, 1979. Upstate took the very first matchup 70-50, and the Spartans hold an overall 9-5 advantage in the series.

The Spartans will be looking for a season sweep of Charleston Southern as they took the first meeting of the year 70-53 on Dec. 28 inside the G.B. Hodge Center in their Big South opener.

Brianna Lewis scored a game-high 24 points in the win alongside six assists and five rebounds. Barrett Herring notched 13 points while Michaela Gibbons also scored in double-figures with 12 points. Riley Popplewell added 13 boards and four steals in the contest. Ahlea Myers led the Buccaneers in the loss with 16 points off the bench. Tori Gittens contributed 11 points.

Last time out
UPSTATE – Upstate is coming off a rough outing against High Point this past Saturday where the Spartans fell 81-45 to the Panthers. Brianna Lewis and Riley Popplewell ended the game with 17 and 10 points, respectively. Barrett Herring recorded a 9-point, 8-rebound effort in the loss. Anda Kuzmina tied a season-high seven rebounds.

Charleston Southern – The Buccaneers are riding a seven-game losing skid and have dropped 13 out of their last 14 contests. Most recently, they fell to Radford 64-40 on Saturday. Tierra Steede's 10 points led the Bucs overall in the contest. Tyra Wright chipped in eight points while Kelsie Ruff had six points and six rebounds in the game.

Ones to watch
UPSTATE – Brianna Lewis is Upstate's leading scorer with 14.4 points per game. She also averages 5.1 assists. Barrett Herring is averaging 8.6 points per game and leads the Spartans with 28 blocks. Senior Riley Popplewell is 23 rebounds away from 700 and 90 points shy of 1,000.

Charleston Southern – Tierra Steede is averaging double-digit scoring for the Bucs with 10.4 points per game, while also leading CSU with 6.9 rebounds per contest and 19 blocked shots. Carmella Walker has started all 22 games for CSU and is averaging 9.8 points per game, while leading the Bucs with 48 steals.

The Spartans take a week off before returning to the Hodge on Tuesday, Feb. 18 when they host Hampton University at 6:00 p.m.
