SPARTANBURG, S.C. – SCHEDULE UPDATE: First pitch has been moved up to 3:00 p.m. due to incoming weather. (2/18/20, 10:20 a.m.)

USC Upstate baseball will host Furman University Tuesday evening in the Spartans' first midweek matchup of the season. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Cleveland S. Harley Baseball Park.

Kyle Schmitt is expected to make his season debut with a start on the mound on Tuesday. The senior righty had 33 strikeouts in 19 appearances including 13 starts for Upstate last season. He posted a 2-3 record with a 5.46 ERA.

The Spartans are coming off an opening weekend series win against Long Island University where Upstate put on a pitching clinic in the first two games to take both wins. Jordan Marks retired the side in the first four straight innings on Friday and went 7.1 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts, four hits, and one walk. The Spartans took game one 4-0.

In game two, Ben Ferrer and Kevin Davis combined for a tied program record of 17 strikeouts in a game. Ferrer fanned a career-high 13 batters in 7.1 innings of work before Davis took over to strikeout four more en route to a 5-2 win.

Freshman Ben Olson went yard on Sunday, but the Spartans dropped the season finale 5-4. The two-run shot was his first collegiate homerun.

Will Wheeler made two appearances on the weekend for three total innings of no-hit, no-run relief work. He stepped in on Friday with one out and one runner on in the eighth inning to fan four batters and preserve Upstate's shutout. On Sunday, he took over with two outs and a runner on in the eighth to retire the final four LIU batters in the game. He ended his weekend with six strikeouts.

The Paladins are coming off a series win against La Salle University this past weekend.
