Spartans Blast Buccaneers in Conference Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C.  – The USC Upstate softball team won the first two games of the weekend series against Charleston Southern on Friday evening at the Charleston Southern Softball Complex.
 
USC Upstate (10-4, 2-0 BSC) pounded out eight runs in the first game of the double header and recorded another five runs in the night cap between the two squads. Bre Cooper (Massillon, Ohio) extended her hitting streak to seven games and hit her first career homerun in the first game of the night. Tiffany Domingue (York, S.C.) made a strong return to the Spartan lineup with a homerun, a double and a trio of RBI's on the night. Peyton Darnell (Fort Mill, S.C.) also had a strong impact with a five RBI night behind a double and a homerun.
 
Game 1: USC Upstate 8, Charleston Southern 6

Scoring Breakdown
 
Top 1st: Bre Cooper (Massillon, Ohio) led off the game with a single through the left side of the infield. Sarah Price (Landrum, S.C.) reached on fielder's choice as Cooper was out at second. Price stole second and came around to score on a Peyton Darnell (Fort Mill, S.C.) RBI double to Right Field.
 
Bottom 2nd: Brooklyn Brewington singled through the left side of the infield to start the inning and moved over to second on a wild pitch. Brewington came around to score on a SeaEnna Satcher RBI single up the middle.
 
Bottom 3rd: Sarah Brown reached on a one out fielding error by Tiffany Domingue (York, S.C.). A few batters later the Buccaneers scored three unearned runs on a throwing error by Marisa Soterakis (Miramar, Fla.).
 
Top 6th: Marisa Soterakis was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and Cooper smacked her first career homerun over the left center field fence. Price singled down the left field line to keep the inning alive and stole second to move into scoring position. A few pitches later Price found her way to third base via wild pitch. An RBI fielder's choice from Darnell tied the game at four. A few batters later Celeste Delorenzo (Ormond Beach, Fla.) double to left center field to give the Spartans the lead.
 
Top 7th: Cassie Norris (Powell, Tenn.) began the inning with a single up the middle. Olivia Marshall came into the game to pinch run and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from Soterakis. Price roped and RBI single into right field to score Marshall. Domingue then hit a two-run blast to left center field to end the scoring for the Spartans.
 
Bottom 7th: Back-to-back doubles by Charleston Southern led off the bottom of the inning and brought the Buccaneers within a trio of runs. A few batters later a sacrifice fly scored the final run of the contest for Charleston Southern.

 
Notables

Cooper went 2-for-4 at the plate with a homerun and two RBI's.
Price finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate within an RBI knock and a trio of runs scored.
Domingue hit a two-run homerun, Darnell recorded a two-run double and Delorenzo finished with an RBI double as well.
Mallie Brown pitched a complete game and struck out five batters on the night.

Top 1st: Cooper hits a one out single to center field and moves into scoring positon on a stolen base. Domingue blasts a double up the middle to score the first run of the game.
 
Top 3rd: Domingue reaches on a fielder's choice with two outs in the inning and Darnell launches a two-run homerun over the left field fence.
 
Top 5th: Madison Hill hit a leadoff single to left centerfield and Dezi Williams came into the game to run for Hill. Williams advanced to second on a single down the left line from Price. Cooper moved the runners on a sacrifice bunt, and Williams came around to score on a wild pitch. Moments later Darnell doubled to center field to give the Spartans a five-run cushion.

Darnell led the offense with a 2-for-3 night at the plate with 3 RBI's.
Marisa Soterakis recorded a multi-hit performance and Tiffany Domingue went 1-for-4 with an RBI double.
Savannah Brown pitched a complete game shutout and struck out a trio of batters in the process.

The Spartans will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon against Charleston Southern. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
