
Hawkins Announces the Signing of Lauer Ahead of 2022 Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate head softball coach Chris Hawkins has announced the signing of Denver Lauer, an incoming freshman out of Sandy Spring, Md. Lauer will report this fall ahead of the 2022 season.
Lauer comes to Upstate from Sherwood High School, which was named the top high school softball program of the decade by USA Today in 2020. Additionally, the Warriors are the only softball team to be honored as one of USA Today's 39 best programs in high school sports history.
A captain of Sherwood's varsity softball team, Lauer was a First-Team All-County selection in 2021. The dual-sport athlete also lettered in basketball and served as the captain of the junior varsity team.
Academically, she was a member of the honor roll each semester in high school, completing her degree with a 4.0 cumulative GPA. Lauer was awarded the 2021 Outstanding Student Award for best female athlete by the physical education department, and was the recipient of the 2021 Frederick H. "Tank" Schultze Scholarship which is awarded to an athlete who helps others, has faced adversity, and demonstrates athletic promise.
"Denver is a true utility player, and we are fortunate to get a high caliber player this late. She is an awesome person and an instant boost to our program!" said Coach Hawkins.
