CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the first time since joining the Big South in 2018, USC Upstate women's soccer has claimed multiple weekly awards as the conference announced sophomore midfielder Ashley Finn and sophomore goalkeeper Cora Brendle as the league's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.
Â
Finn's honor carries additional significance as she's the first Spartan to earn a Big South Offensive Player of the Week honor as she delivered her first-career multi-goal match with a hat trick against South Carolina State Sunday. Her hat trick was just the fifth three-plus goal match in Upstate women's soccer history, the first since Haley Gethin in 2015.
Â
Her four goals on the year rank second in the Big South this season as she enters the week ranked atop the conference in shots per game (3.80), shots on goal per game (2.20) while ranking second in goals per game (0.80) and points per game (1.60) and third in shot accuracy (.579).
Â
Brendle becomes just the second Spartan to earn a Big South Defensive Player of the Week honor, joining Logan Pace who earned the honor on September 3, 2019. In matches against Davidson and South Carolina State, Brendle pitched a pair of shutouts, her first career shutout against the Wildcats and a combined shutout against the Lady Bulldogs.
Â
In the two matches, she recorded 19 total saves, including a career-high 14 saves against Davidson that represented the second-best single match save total in program history. Brendle enters the week ranked seventh in the country in save percentage (.941) and ninth in saves per game (8.00) while also leading the Big South in goals against average (.562).
Â
With their weekly award wins, Finn and Brendle are the third and fourth all-time Big South Weekly Award winners in program history, joining Pace and Madison McNally.
