Women's Soccer Pauses Big South Conference Play to Take on South Carolina State

How They Stack Up 

USC Upstate sits second in the Big South conference standings with a 5-2-0 record after falling to Campbell University on Saturday night. S.C. State most recently fell 7-0 on the road to Howard University.  
 
Series History  

 
The Spartans and the Bulldogs of South Carolina State have matched up sporadically since their first meeting in 2009 where Upstate fell 3-1 at the Border Classic. Upstate leads the overall record against S.C. State 3-1-2 and most recently won 6-0 at home in the 2021 season.  

Players to Watch 

Dara Russo continues to lead the Spartans through her freshman campaign after starting 13 games and recording five goals, 39 shots, 18 shots on goal, 10 points, and three game winning goals. Captains Ashley Finn and Cora Brendle and senior Alaina McKnight have started all 14 games this season for the Spartans. 10 Spartans have recorded goals this season (Russo, Finn, S. Thomas, Bjarnadottir, Arnold, Baccelli, Gibson, McKnight, Bastos, and Ferreira) while 11 Spartans have been credited with assists (Bjarnadottir, Sanders, Finn, S. Thomas, Arnold, Baccelli, Gibson, Baer, de Barros, Jackson, and Listenbee). 

Russo sits in the Big South rankings for shots (4th), shots per game (4th), goals (7th), and goals per game (6th). Brendle continues to lead the Big South for goals against average (1.03) while still being ranked third for save percentage (.813), third for shutouts (4) and shutouts per game (0.29), and fifth for saves per game (4.36) and saves (61). 

Last Match   

Upstate most recently capped its four-game winning streak after falling 3-0 to the Fighting Camels. Emily Sanders, Lauren Darbo, and Sydney Thomas led the Spartans with one shot on goal each. Cora Brendle played just over 71 minutes for the Spartans and made two saves before Caitlyn Davis was subbed in to finish the remaining 18 minutes.  

S.C. State most recently traveled to Washington where they fell 7-0 to Howard University. Howard got the jump on S.C. State, scoring three goals before half. The Bulldogs made 14 saves and had five shots on goal.
