Emily Rangel Brings Home Upstate's Seventh Big South Honor of the Season as she is Named Freshman of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Freshman Emily Rangel earned the first Big South honors of her career as she was named the Big South Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon by the Big South Conference. The honor is the seventh Big South Weekly Honor that Upstate has earned this season.

Emily Rangel worked her way into the Spartans' starting lineup late in the season and has started the last four consecutive games, with starts in the back line against S.C. State and Winthrop this past week. Rangel earned her first career goal during the mid-week match up with S.C. State as well as earning her first career assist, helping fellow defender Alaina McKnight score. Against Winthrop, Rangel started in the back line and played the full 90 minutes. She had a hand in the Spartans' back-to-back shutouts and earned an assist on McKnight's game winning goal to secure Upstate a spot in the Big South Tournament with the 1-0 win. The freshman has made eight game starts with 14 game appearances and playing the full 90 minutes four games. So far in the 2022 season, Rangel has recorded one goal, two assists, four shots on goal, and five shots.

UP Next for the Spartans
Upstate gears up for the final Big South matchup of the regular season as they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to play Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night. Upon the conclusion of the regular season, Upstate will play in the Big South Conference Championships with the semi-final game set for November 3rd.
