Team Celebration vs Campbell

Men's Soccer

Back to it, Spartans Host Furman After 9 Days Off

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It's been too long since I've gotten to do one of these. A well-rested USC Upstate men's soccer team hosts the Paladins of Furman tomorrow night for CESA night.

The MatchUP
Who: Furman (5-3-1, 0-1-0 SoCon) at USC Upstate (2-4-3, 0-0-1 Big South)
Where:  County University Soccer Stadium; Spartanburg, S.C.
When: 7:00 p.m.

Series History
Furman leads the overall series 1-6-1, but the Spartans won the last matchup 3-2 in Greenville last year. The two teams have played every year since 2018, with Furman leading the goal differential 9-4 in that span.

Last Match
The Spartans have been on a bit of a hiatus after a match at Gardner-Webb was postponed due to concerns over Hurricane Ian. Their last game action came in a hard fought 2-2 draw with Big South rival Campbell.

Furman's last outing resulted in a tough, 5-1 loss at the hands of a top 25 team in UNC Greensboro. The Paladins are on a two-game losing streak now…

The Six Degrees
…after losing to Coastal Carolina 3-1 before their SoCon opener with UNC Greensboro. The Spartans took a similar loss to the Chanticleers, falling 4-1 in Conway for the season opener.

The Chanticleers fired a barrage of shots in both matches, (15 vs UPST, 16 vs Furman), but landed more SOG against Furman (9) than they did against Upstate (4). Furman was able to create more good opportunities against Coastal than Upstate though (8 SOG to Upstate's 2).

Players to Watch
Felipe Marty is one of the straws that stirs the drink for Upstate. He's dished out 3 assists on the year, including one off a perfect free kick to Andrin Zumbuhl, who scored his second goal in green vs Campbell. Another defender to keep an eye on is Kasper Jørgensen of course. Kasper has established himself as one of the dependable pillars on the Spartan backline. The freshman duo of Peyton Pressley and Braiden Hall will hope to cause some chaos and create opportunities against the Paladins.

UP Next for the Spartans
Upstate will stay in Spartanburg for a while now, hosting three home games in a row against Furman (10/4), Radford (10/8), and Presbyterian (10/12).
