Spartan Soccer Doubleheader Highlights a full Slate of Events During Family Weekend at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate men's and women's soccer teams enter Family Weekend at USC Upstate playing some of their best soccer of the season and will take that momentum into Saturday's doubleheader which caps a full weekend of activities on the Upstate campus.

The fun begins Thursday night as USC Upstate takes over downtown Spartanburg for Morgan Square Madness.  This free and open to the public event will take place in the heart of Spartanburg in Morgan Square and feature the USC Upstate men's and women's basketball teams, giveaways and a host of interactive events and contests throughout the night.  The fun begins at 6:00 pm and for an event map and complete details click here

Family Weekend continues on Friday with Rocktoberfest hosted by the USC Upstate Campus Activities Board, where an entire carnival rides and games will transform the Burroughs Lot behind the G. B. Hodge Center.

Soccer takes center stage on Saturday as the doubleheader on the pitch is preceded by the Josh Lee Memorial 5K and Family Fest gets fans in the mood to have fun starting at 3:00 pm with interactive games for the kids, bounce houses, food and more starting at 3:00 pm!  To register and purchase your tickets for Family Fest, click here

USC Upstate athletics, in partnership with Johnny and Laurie Lee of Spartanburg, S.C., is excited to host the 7th Annual Josh Lee Memorial 5K on Saturday. The annual event was founded by Cathy and Thomas Voelker and was first held in 2016 as part of the Mighty Moo Festival in Cowpens.  The race moved to the USC Upstate campus three years ago and is named in honor of the late Josh Lee, a USC Upstate cross-country/ track runner and scholar-athlete who died in a car accident in October 2015.  Registration for the race is $30 and participants can sign up here.  The course map can be viewed here. If you can't make it but still want to donate, click here.

Upstate women's soccer (5-3-3, 3-1-0 Big South) looks to continue its Big South success after beating Radford 2-0 on the road on Tuesday night. The Spartans return to County University Soccer Stadium to take on Longwood (4-6-3, 1-2-1 Big South) at 4:00 p.m. Junior Cora Brendle and Dara Russo received Big South honors on Monday afternoon following their performances against Presbyterian last week. Russo notched her fourth goal of the season against Radford with a little help from Margret Edda Bjarnadottir who earned her second assist of the season. Brendle achieved her fourth solo shutout of the season and with help from the Spartan back line was able to get back-to-back shutout wins.

The USC Upstate men's soccer team (2-4-3, 0-0-1 Big South) is riding into Saturday night's Big South matchup with Radford (2-7-1, 1-2-0 Big South) after a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Furman.  Upstate has found success against the Highlanders lately and finds themselves on a two-game win streak in the series, including a 6-0 victory last season at Radford.  After playing the first full 90 minutes of his career against Campbell, Felipe Marty once again established himself as a consistent distributor of the ball on the back line and is always a threat to score himself or put another Spartan on the board. Offensively, Jeremy Montero is hitting his stride, rattling off 6 shots against Furman and 13 over the last 3 matches. He also started his first game since the season opener with Coastal Carolina, so expect him to keep the pressure on the Highlander defense. The men's match with Radford is set for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff time.
