BLACKSBURG, VA. – USC Upstate women's basketball fell 79-24 to the No.14 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies on Monday night in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Upstate held ranked Virginia Tech scoreless for the first two and a half minutes of play and made seven rebounds. The Hokies scored first off a free throw with 7:19 remaining on the clock in the first quarter. Rebekah Gordon got Upstate on the board just over a minute later with a turnaround jumper. Isabella Geraci got the Spartans to four points off a layup with just over two minutes left. Geraci pushed the score to 20-5 with a free throw just before the break.
The Spartans came out of the break with a solid defense yet again, keeping the Hokies at 20 points for nearly the first two and a half minutes again. Cali Levine recorded her first points of the game with a made free throw two minutes before halftime. AC Markham earned the first three pointer of the game for Upstate with 1:20 left in the half. The Spartans went into half time trailing the Hokies 36-9.
Coming out of halftime, Virginia Tech was able to score early to try to keep their moment. A defensive rebound from Geraci helped Upstate score as Jeni Levine posted her first points of the game with 7:35 left in the third quarter. Nyla Walker claimed the last four points of the third quarter to make the game 64-15 going into the final ten minutes.
Upstate made a push in the final quarter of the game, not only scoring more points than the previous three quarters, but also allowing the Hokies the least number of points in a quarter. Gordon got her second basket of the game with eight minutes left on the clock to make the game 69-17. With some assistance from Geraci, AC Markham scored a hook shot which was followed up with another two points with a layup from Vera Soderblom. Geraci then claimed the last points of the game for Upstate as she made a series of free throws to make the score 77-24. The final score of the game was 79-24 in favor of the host No.14 ranked Hokies.
Head coach Jason Williams was pleased with the effort his team put forth saying, "We are slowly getting better and I'm thankful we to have a group of kids in this program who continue to work".
