Hot-Shooting Second Half Lifts Women's Basketball to Road Win at Radford

RADFORD, Va. – Shaking first-half shooting woes and snapping a seven-game series winning streak for Radford, USC Upstate women's basketball shot 60 percent from the field and put up 41 points in the second half to earn a 66-55 road victory Tuesday evening.

Leading a quartet of double-figure scorers, redshirt sophomore guard Chellia Watson secured her fifth 20-plus point scoring game during Big South play, pouring in a game-high 20 points, scoring 13 or her 20 points in the second half. Spurring a huge second half, she shot 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the field, including her lone three-point make while pulling in each of her three rebounds.

Tallying 13, 12, and 11 points, respectively, junior guard Jada Logan, senior forward Molly Coleman, and freshman guard Rachael Rose joined Watson in double-figures. Adding a game-high 11 rebounds, Logan posted a double-double, her second of the season and the fourth of her career. Coleman neared a double-double for Upstate, corralling a season-high nine boards.

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • Capturing momentum early, Upstate opened the game on a 12-1 run to stake an early lead, seeing a 5-0 and 7-0 run cut by a Radford free throw. Molly Coleman tallied five of the run's 12 points with Hannah Roberts hitting a three and Rachael Rose and Chellia Watson adding layups.
  • Following a Highlander field goal, the Spartans added a layup from Jada Logan to outscore Radford 14-3 throughout the quarter. Radford's three points in the quarter were the fewest for an Upstate opponent in any quarter this season.
Second Quarter
  • Chipping into Upstate's 11-point lead, Radford opened the quarter with a 7-0 scoring stretch to trim the Spartan advantage to four.
  • Stopping the Highlanders' run, a layup from Denijsha Wilson kickstarted a 9-3 Spartan scoring run to push the lead back to double digits. Leading the run, Watson scored five of the nine points, including closing the run with an and-1 conversion.
  • Erasing Upstate's lead, Radford closed the half on a 13-2 scoring run, including its largest scoring run of the game, 8-0, to end the half. Heating up from three, the Highlanders drained three treys to close the half and take a one-point advantage into the locker room.
Third Quarter
  • Regaining the lead for the Spartans, Watson made consecutive layups to put Upstate back on top and push her into double-figures for the game. Adding to her scoring total, she scored the first nine points of the third quarter for Upstate.
  • Answering to reclaim the lead, Radford outscored Upstate 12-3 to take its largest advantage of the game, six points, heading into the latter stages of the quarter. Following Watson's 4-0 run to open the quarter, the Highlanders scored seven straight points before a Watson three snapped the run with Radford adding five consecutive points following the three.
  • Fighting back to reclaim the lead, Upstate used its largest scoring run of the game to erase Radford's six-point lead, posting nine straight points to regain the lead. Closing the quarter, the Spartans outscored the Highlanders 11-3, taking a two-point lead into the final frame.
Fourth Quarter
  • Opening the final quarter, Upstate and Radford went blow-for-blow with Radford outscoring Upstate 7-5, leading to a 48-all tie with 6:02 to play. Scoring each of the five points for the Spartans was Coleman who moved into double-figures during the stretch.
  • Taking the lead back for good, Logan took matters into her own hands, scoring five straight points for the Spartans. Her five points set up a 9-2 scoring run for the Spartans, pushing the advantage to seven.
  • After Radford hit a shot to cut the Upstate advantage to five, the Spartans closed the game on a 9-3 run to claim a double-digit victory. Rose scored seven of the final nine points, including five points from the charity stripe.
