Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate softball kicked off the Upstate Classic with a 4-0 win over Northern Kentucky, extending their winning record to 6-0.  

Upstate was slow to start going scoreless through three innings but found a groove scoring one run in the fourth, one run in the fifth, and two runs in the sixth. Casey Goguts hit her first homerun of the season to put Upstate ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Hannah Houge threw 123 pitches across seven innings for Upstate surrendering three hits and recording fourteen strikeouts.

How It Happened   

• B4: Madison Lanoux put Upstate in the board in the bottom of the fourth off a double to left center from Summer Johnson.  

• B5: Marisa Soterakis pinch ran for Bella Bertot after Bertot was walked to first base. Soterakis stole second and came home after Sarah Price singled up the middle.  

• B6: Casey Gogurts stepped up to the plate as the first batter of the inning and hit a homerun through the left side to make to score 3-0. 

• B6: Celeste Delorenzo hit a double up the middle, allowing Tiffany Domingue to score.  

Notable   

• Hannah Houge reached a new season high in shutouts, recording 14 on the day, replacing her former season high of seven shutouts against Towson (2/12/2022) 

• Casey Goguts is one of three Spartans who have hit homeruns so far this season (Payton Darnell and Summer Johnson)  

• Upstate is ranked fourth in the NCAA for stolen bases per game (3.8) 

• Upstate is ranked seventh in the NCAA for batting average (.396)
