An 8-0 Shutout Advances Upstate Softball's Winning Streak to Eight With the Five Inning Win Over Canisius

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Softball extended its lead to eight wins after an 8-0 shutout over Canisius College in five innings.  

The Spartans came into the game with two wins over Northern Kentucky in the Upstate Classic. Summer Johnson kicked off Upstate's runs in the bottom of the second inning followed by hitting a double in the bottom of the third to give Upstate a three-run lead. Upstate put away another five runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Hannah Houge threw 79 pitches through five innings, surrendering only three hits while recording eleven strikeouts.

How It Happened     

  • B2: Summer Johnson scored the first run of the game after Celeste Delorenzo hit a ball to right center, earning herself a double.  

  • B3: Johnson stepped up once again for Upstate hitting a double up the middle to send Madison Lanoux and Emily Dixon to home plate, giving the Spartans a three-run lead.  

  • B5: Pinch hitter, Alanna deal hit a single up the middle with the bases loaded, advancing Alexa Sanchez home, Tiffany Domingue to third and, Celeste Delorenzo to second.  

  • B5: Maris Soterakis walked after a 3-1 count, shifting Delorenzo to second, Domingue to third, and Sanchez home to make the score 5-0 with one out.  

  • B5: Madison Lanoux cleared the bases with a double through left center to end the game and give Upstate the 8-0 win. 

Notable     

  • Hannah Houge leads the Upstate pitchers with five wins and no losses and three shutouts. 

  • Summer Johnson leads the team with a .591 batting average after recording three hits, one run, and one RBI on the day.  

  • 14 out of the 16 Spartans who have appeared at the plate have recorded at least one hit.  

  • Out of Upstate's eight wins, four of them have been shutouts (N.C. Central 2/11/22, Towson 2/12/22, NKU 2/18/22, Canisius 2/20)
