USC Upstate prepares to host Tennessee Tech, Cleveland State, and Pitt in the Wings Etc. Classic. Upstate will play Tennessee Tech and Cleveland State on Friday afternoon, Pitt and Cleveland State on Saturday, and finish out the weekend against Tennessee Tech.
The Spartans swept Northern Kentucky 4-0 on Friday and 4-1 on Saturday followed by an 8-0 win on Sunday and a 1-0 win on Monday over Canisius College. This weekend advanced Upstate's record to 9-0 and put head coach Chris Hawkins total wins to 991.
Casey Goguts hit her first home run of the season against Northern Kentucky on Friday. Goguts finished out the weekend with six hits, three runs, and 4 runs batted in. Madison Lanoux had an exceptional weekend, scoring the winning run against Canisius on Monday. Lanoux recorded six hits, four runs, and three RBI for the Upstate Classic.
Hannah Houge pitched for a total of 14 innings this weekend recording double digit strikeouts against NKU and Canisius. Houge surrendered six hits and one walk for the tournament and while throwing 29 strikeouts and allowing no runs.
Players to Watch:
USC Upstate (9-0):
Hannah Houge has been Upstate's primary pitcher since hosting the Spartan Classic opening weekend. Houge has appeared in six out of Upstate's nine games, while making four starts. The right-handed pitcher has thrown through 27.0 innings surrendering six runs and recording 42 strikeouts. Houge recorded double digits in both of her starts during the Upstate Classic.
Tennessee Tech (7-3):
Mackenzi Fitzgerald has started all 10 games for the Golden Eagles this season. Fitzgerald has recorded 37 at bats, 16 runs, 18 hits, 24 total bases, and a .649 slugging percentage.
Cleveland State (4-5):
Melissa Holzopfel has started all nine games for the Vikings this season. Holzopfel has recorded 33 at bats, eight runs, 16 hits, 20 total bases, and a .606 slugging percentage.
Pitt (5-4):
Haylie Bruson has started all nine games for the Panthers this season. Bruson has recorded 30 at bats, four runs, 10 hits, 14 total bases and a .467 slugging percentage.
