Upstate Softball Sweeps Tennessee Tech and Cleveland State in Day One of the Wings Etc. Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Spartans kicked off the first day of the Wings Etc. Classic with a 3-2 win over Tennessee Tech in the seventh inning followed by a 9-1 win over Cleveland State in five innings.  

USC Upstate had a slow start to the tournament, scoring two runs in four innings but nevertheless held the lead until the top of the seventh inning when Tennessee Tech tied the game. Madison Lanoux came up big with a double to right center to send Denver Lauer home for the win. Alyssa Kelly threw 91 pitches through seven innings, surrendering five hits and two runs while recording five strike outs.  

Upstate came out hot in against Cleveland State scoring four runs in the first inning followed by one in the second, three in the third, and one in the fourth. Celeste Delorenzo led the Spartans with 3 RBI followed by Casey Goguts and Peyton Darnell with two apiece. Hannah Houge achieved her seventh straight win after pitching 4.0 innings allowing only three hits and one run. Houge was relieved by Mackenzie Hayes who threw 10 pitches allowing just one walk.

How It Happened       

  • B1: Madison Lanoux homered to right field to give Upstate the first run of the game.  

  • B4: Casey Goguts increased Upstate's lead by hitting a home run through the left side, making the score 2-0 

  • T7: Abby Buettner put Tennessee Tech on the board after she came home off of Richardson's at bat. Sydney Dukes joined Buettner at home off of KaDedra Temple's at bat.  

  • B7: Denver Lauer was able to reach home plate after Lanoux hit a double to right center.

How It Happened      

  • B1: Casey Goguts kicked off the Spartan's runs after advancing to third and hustling home due to an error by the Viking right fielder. 

  • B1: With Tiffany Domingue on second and Summer Johnson third, Peyton Darnell hit a double up right center, providing enough time for two more runs for the Spartans.  

  • B1: After reaching second, Darnell was able to round home plate with a double from Denver Lauer. 

  • B2: With Marisa Soterakis on third, Soterakis made a break for home off a fly ball to right field from Goguts to give the Spartans a commanding 5-0 lead.  

  • B3: With the bases loaded, Delorenzo hit double to left field providing time for Soterakis, Liza Simmerson, and Domingue to further the lead to 8-0.  

  • T4: Katie Holmes stepped on to double to pinch run for Becky Hurosky and was able to give the Vikings their first run of the game after Brooke Albaugh sent a ball to right center. 

  • B4: Goguts capped off the Spartans' runs with a home run  

Notable       

  • Casey Goguts hit two home runs today, one in each game; this puts her at three homeruns on the season. Goguts leads the team with 30 total bases.  

  • Of the Spartans 17 who have game appearances, 14 have scored at least one run. 

  • Prior to today's matches, Hannah Houge shared the lead with Florida State and Georgia Tech for most victories in the NCAA. 

  • Upstate is ranked third in the NCAA for fielding percentage (.996) 

  • USC Upstate is the only Big South team to not received a loss
