USC Upstate gears up to take on Appalachian State on Tuesday afternoon before jetting off to Deland, Florida to play in the Stetson International Tournament. The Spartans are coming off the Wings Etc. Classic where they went 3-1 for the tournament. On Friday Upstate swept Tennessee Tech 3-2 and Cleveland State 9-1. Saturday Upstate was able to bounce back with a 7-0 win over Cleveland State after receiving its first loss falling 2-1 to Pitt in extra innings.
Hannah Houge and Alyssa Kelly split the tournament with Houge pitching against Cleveland State on Friday and Pitt on Saturday while Kelly handled Tennessee Tech on Friday and Cleveland State on Saturday. Houge pitched for 12.0 innings throwing 167 pitches, surrendering eight hits and three runs while recording 14 strikeouts and Kelly pitched for 14.0 innings throwing 176 pitches, surrendering six hits and two runs, while recording 12 strikeouts.
Madison Lanoux had another exceptional weekend recording two runs, three hits, two RBI, and one run. Lanoux leads Upstate with 12 runs and 20 hits. Denver Lauer set new season highs this weekend against Cleveland State, Tennessee Tech and the University of Pittsburgh. The freshman had eight catches and eight putouts this weekend playing center field while also recording three runs, four hits and one RBI.
Players to Watch:
USC Upstate (12-1):
Starting catcher Casey Goguts goes into this week with a .989 fielding percentage as well as leading the Spartans in total bases. Goguts recorded three runs, five hits, four RBI and two homeruns during the Wings Etc. Classic.
Appalachian State (7-5):
Emma Jones sits near the top of App State's leader board with 11 runs, 11 hits, five RBI and 19 total bases. Jones will square off against the Spartans with a .297 batting average and a .514 slugging percentage.
